Lyrics:
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.
Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work's in vain,
But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.
If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul,
You can tell the love of Jesus and say, "He died for all."
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.
Don't ever feel discouraged, for Jesus is your friend;
And if you lack for knowledge, He'll ne'er refuse to lend.
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.
Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work's in vain,
But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.
If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul,
You can tell the love of Jesus and say, "He died for all."
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.
Don't ever feel discouraged, for Jesus is your friend;
And if you lack for knowledge, He'll ne'er refuse to lend.
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.
The region of Gilead is hilly and characterized in the west by deep valleys, much like the hill country of Judah. Its higher elevations were covered with forests during biblical times; rainfall is plentiful, accumulating an average of 20–32 inches per year (Rasmussen, Zondervan Atlas, 27–30). The topography and climate make the region good for farming wheat, olives, and grapes, and raising flocks. Gilead was also famous for a balm used for medicinal or cosmetic purposes (Jer 8:22, 46:11), which could also be promoted by the international Transjordanian route, a major north-south trade route that passed through the region.
