The stock market keeps hitting record highs, unemployment has fallen to levels that would have been viewed as unsustainably low just a few years ago, wages are rising swiftly, and corporate profit margins are unexpanding. Americans are so confident in their job prospects that they are voluntarily quitting in record numbers. Yet President Joe Biden's approval ratings keep plummeting, and views of his economic policies are deeply underwater. Consumer sentiment hit the worst level in a decade, lower even than at the depths of the pandemic in 2020. And this is no doubt exacting a political toll, emboldening critics of White House policies on Capitol Hill and sapping the ability of the president or Capitol Hill leadership to drag lawmakers along with their legislative plans. The problem, of course, is that prices are rising faster than wages. Alan Tonelson calculates that real wages fell 1.8 percent in the February through October period over which Biden has presided. For non-supervisory workers, wages are down 1.5 percent. In other words, workers are poorer than they were before Biden took office. That's not what people were promised in exchange for pulling the lever for the Democrat. And it feels even worse than that. Food and gasoline are probably the most salient areas of inflation for most middle class families, followed by household durable goods and automobiles. Food prices are up 10.5 percent, which makes for some eye-popping credit card bills at the end of each month. Gasoline prices are felt even more frequently. New cars are hard to find, and used cars are up by nearly 25 percent nationwide and closer to 30 percent in some areas. So it is particularly dumb for some of the administration's supporters to adopt the view that inflation is not really so bad. Yet they keep doing so. Over the weekend, MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle said that "the dirty little secret" of the American economy is that "while nobody likes to pay more, on average, we have the money to do so." Far from making Americans feel better about inflation, this kind of thing is likely to convince them that their elites are unlikely to do anything to arrest the problem. After all, it's only the middle class getting squeezed, and the only things getting more expensive are the necessities. Other than that, everything is fine.
