The fruit of the Spirit

The fruit of the Spirit simply is the inner character of Jesus himself that is brought about in us through the process of Christian spiritual formation. It is the outcome of spiritual formation. It is "Christ formed in us." It is called "fruit" because, like the fruit of trees or vines, it is an outgrowth of what we have become, not the result of a special effort to bear fruit. And we have become "fruitful" in this way because we have received the presence of Christ's Spirit through the process of spiritual formation, and now that Spirit, interacting with us, fills us with love, joy, peace. . . .

Under His Protection

"But he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm" (Acts 28:5 nkjv).

When the apostle Paul was placed on a ship bound for Rome, he experienced a shipwreck along the way. But the Lord had appeared to Paul and assured him that no lives would be lost. They would reach their destination safely. Everyone made it ashore, and as Paul was warming his hands over the fire, a venomous snake fastened itself onto Paul's hand. Paul simply shook off the snake, and everyone thought he was some sort of god because he survived. But Paul's time had not yet come.

This reminds us of one thing: until God is done with us, we are indestructible. Jesus said of believers, "They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won't hurt them" (Mark 16:18 nlt). This doesn't mean we should hold snake-handling services as some so-called churches have been known to do. Nor should we go out and drink poison to test our faith. That is testing the Lord, and it isn't what God is saying.

Here is what it does mean: until God is done with us, nothing will stop us. We don't have to live in constant fear for our lives, because until the day the Lord is done with us, we will be safe in His protective care.

And what about the day when He is done with us? As Paul himself said, "To live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21 nkjv).

Spiritual Formation at Home (Part 4 of 4)

Some spiritual formation at home strategies are more difficult to implement than others. Intergenerational services, for example, often involve logistical challenges and can face resistance from age-segmented ministries that have an existing game plan.

It is often best to start with low-lying fruit – strategies that will reach the greatest number of people with the fewest leadership headaches. At Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall, Texas, for example, the leadership designed a strategy that accomplished all ten best-practice objectives with three simple strategic goals.

1. MAKE IT EASY: Make it easy for families to do the right thing with “bite-sized” ideas for marriage and family intentionality. These inexpensive tools are available on a campus and online center.

2. MAKE IT MORE LIKELY: To make it more likely that families will do the right thing integrated campaigns are run two or three times per year. Each is designed to inspire and equip couples and families to become more intentional during the next 120 days.

3. GIVE A CLEAR PATH: To help leverage milestones and encourage spiritual disciplines in a child’s life parents are given free coaching kits on key birthdays as a gift from the church. Each features a short DVD with inspiration and training and several simple starter ideas.

Despite his status as one of the most influential and intelligent Christian authors of the 20th century, C.S. Lewis never thought of himself as a professional theologian. While he was well-read in many types of literary genres, he did not go to Seminary to obtain a Masters in Theology and study a year of Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek. He was not a Pastor who preached sermons to a congregation for many years but a raw, honest philosopher and professor of literature who wrote as well as any Christian of his time could. He had a gift for clearly articulating his perspectives on a variety of issues. Above all, he was humble, in that he had an honest evaluation of both his strengths and his weaknesses. I believe this is one of the main reasons why he is still so enjoyable to read even after all these years. In terms of his theology, Lewis himself said he was an “Anglican but not especially ‘high,’ nor especially ‘low,’ nor especially anything else.” So the theology of C.S. Lewis is not something one can immediately discover by simply perusing a certain book of his to see exactly where he stands on certain doctrinal issues; it is much more subtle and convoluted than that. But in this book, you will find his different thoughts from his many books about certain Christian doctrines and topics pieced together in an easy-to-follow format (Lewis has written nearly 60 books but none of them are on systematic theology). This book offers very clear depictions of his theology concerning subjects such as the doctrine of inspiration, original sin, human depravity, human origins, evolution, intelligent design, theodicy, love and marriage, redemption, grace, new creation, and grief, as his authentic reaction to God after his wife’s death is conveyed. The final chapters also contain all of his greatest quotes arranged and sorted by topic as well as excerpts, quotes, and summaries from most of his books in a quick, easy-to-read, bullet-point format. These last two sections are a particularly great resource to draw from as you can quickly learn about the main points Lewis conveys in his bestselling books.

I tried the words "he was sorry" and the resulting block of search results was these two verses:

Sometimes you get to start the search over on the host website to get all the results. I was unable to execute a search on the host website until I logged in, then I ran the search on "mine" and got around 500 verses in the Darby version
