True Wisdom

I completed my Tuesday night project earlier today when I noticed the search result True Wisdom still waiting to be worked with. Here are a few results.

The following block quote was a search result of "true wisdom"

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON
A proverb is a wise principle stated in concise, and often poetic, terms. The pithy form has a purpose; it is a mnemonic device, making the wisdom of the proverb easy to retain. As we noted in chapter one, the sayings in Proverbs should be regarded as truisms, not inviolable promises. For example, many verses in Proverbs suggest that calamity belongs to the wicked and prosperity to the righteous. Proverbs 11:8 says, “The righteous is delivered from trouble, and it comes to the wicked instead.” That is generally true as a principle, but it is certainly not a rule without exceptions. We know that the wicked do sometimes prosper (Psalm 73:3; Jeremiah 12:1). And trouble does sometimes come to the righteous (2 Thessalonians 1:4–7). “There is a just man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs life in his wickedness” (Ecclesiastes 7:15). So the truism of Proverbs 11:8 isn’t meant to be a promise that can be claimed in every specific situation.
It is generally true, however, that prosperity belongs to the righteous, and trouble comes to the wicked. Whatever prosperity the wicked enjoy and whatever suffering the righteous must endure are always temporary. So the wisdom the proverb conveys is certainly sound. Wicked behavior is utter folly, and righteousness is superior to wickedness, even from a practical standpoint. That’s the lesson Solomon aimed to teach his son.
Notice how the depth of Solomon’s wisdom contrasts sharply with most of the parenting advice being published today. Much of the modern material, including some labeled “Christian,” is appallingly trivial by comparison to the wisdom Solomon sought to pass along to his son. Today’s typical advice for fathers says, “Be a buddy to your son. Go places with him. Teach him about sports. Take him to a ball game. Have fun doing ‘guy’ things with him.” Or, “Compliment your daughter. Notice how she dresses, and find something to praise. Show her affection. Have special nights on which you take her out. Be sensitive to her emotional ups and downs. Listen to her.” And on it goes. Some of those things may be helpful on a certain level, but you can concentrate your energies on all those things and still fail to teach your children wisdom. If that happens, you will not succeed as a parent.
Furthermore, if you focus your energies on the trivial things, you’ll raise shallow children who set their affections on trivial things. Devote your energies to teaching profound things, and you’ll raise children of profound character who love wisdom. Real wisdom for life is the most valuable gift parents can pass on to their children—certainly superior to any material legacy. And what better place to turn to for wisdom to teach our children than an inspired book written for just that purpose?
Wisdom is the theme throughout the Book of Proverbs. The word wisdom dominates the book. Sometimes synonyms (or near synonyms) are used, such as instruction, understanding, or discretion. All those words are simply elements of real wisdom. To know, to understand, to be instructed, and to have discretion is to act wisely. Note carefully that true wisdom includes not simply intellectual content, but practical conduct as well. Wisdom encompasses not only what we know but also what we do and sometimes what we don’t do. “A wise man fears and departs from evil” (Pr 14:16). “He who restrains his lips is wise” (Pr 10:19). “He who wins souls is wise” (Pr 11:30). “He who heeds counsel is wise” (Pr 12:15). Solomon repeatedly made the connection between wisdom and righteous conduct. It’s unfortunate that he did not stay true to this principle in his own later life.
When all is said and done, what is done is as vital to true wisdom as what is said. In short, genuine biblical wisdom involves living righteously. And as parents, it is our duty not only to teach our sons and daughters the concepts of wise living, but also to model wisdom for them, so that they understand that this wisdom is the noblest and purest pursuit of all.[1]

Key Word: Wisdom.
Strong Verses: 10.
Striking Facts: vv. 1–5. Heaven is the place where Wisdom (Christ) has prepared many mansions. Christ Himself is the sacrifice which has been killed and it is His flesh that is meat indeed. His disciples have gone forth with the invitation to the Gospel feast, even the simple being freely invited.[2]

and it a summary of Proverbs 31:30,

§ Pr 31:3031 who fears the Lord. Up to this point the poem concentrates on practical wisdom. Now the basis of all true wisdom is emphasized. The Book of Proverbs ends as it begins: observation of the created order can provide some wisdom and knowledge of God (Rom. 1:20–23), but only the self-revelation of the Creator enables us to know and appreciate the God-centered meaning of reality. True wisdom is seen as the life lived in wholehearted obedience to God’s revelation in His Word, which is “the fear of the Lord” (Pr 1:7 and note). This trust is the foundation and continuing path of wisdom as it brings us to final perfection in Christ [3]

Hey guys,

This week, please read James 3:1-9, taming the tongue.
1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness.3:1  James asserts that the judgment of teachers will be especially strict because greater responsibility rests on them: They teach God’s word to others (Matt 12:36; 18:6).
Apparently, many desired to teach, possibly because of the authority and prestige that accompanied the role. The nt lists teachers, apostles, and prophets as important roles in the early church (Acts 13:1; Eph 4:11). Unqualified teachers appears to have been a critical issue in the early church (1 John 3:7; 2 Pet 2:1; 1 Tim 6:3; 2 Tim 4:3). 2 For we all make many mistakes, and if any one makes no mistakes in what he says he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses that they may obey us, we guide their whole bodies. 4 Look at the ships also; though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So the tongue is a little member and boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 3:5  Some nt passages portray boasting positively as something to be encouraged (1 Cor 1:28–31), while others portray it negatively as something to be avoided (Jas 4:16).6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell. 3:6  The metaphor of fire would have resonated with James’ first-century audience. Ancients relied on wood or charcoal braziers to cook and heat their homes, and the draft from open windows increased the danger of fire spreading
rapidly. Furthermore, ancients possessed few effective means for extinguishing fires.
James’ writing style often reflects the Wisdom Literature  of the ot, which also discussed the dangers of the tongue and speech (e.g., Prov 11:12–13; 15:1; 16:27–28). Wisdom literature teaches that a wise person will take counsel, but a fool will ignore it.
  Wisdom Literature
  Wisdom and Related Terms
Could mean that the tongue is an example of the worldly evil opposed to God, or that the tongue, as a fire, exposes evil within a person (Mark 7:15).
Careless speech can render a person unclean before God.
The tongue can destroy or corrupt the entire course of a person’s life, or the entire course of a community’s existence.
See note on Jas 1:13.7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by humankind, 3:7  Being compared to the elements or creatures of nature would have been particularly degrading to James’ audience. Jewish writers often use this comparison to dehumanize and emphasize less-than-human behaviors (e.g., Jude 12–13; compare the extrabiblical work 1 Enoch 85–90). 8 but no human being can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God.3:9 In this verse, James describes the tongue as double-minded; see note on James 1:8.
The Greek term here, kataraomai, often translated “to curse,” refers to causing injury or harm to someone through a statement. Ancients believed such statements had supernatural power (Mark 11:12–14, 21–22).
Alludes to Gen 1:26–27. James asserts that it is logically inconsistent to curse humanity, the image-bearer, while blessing God, the one who is imaged.

3:2–12 These verses can be taken in three ways: as addressing topics related to teachers in the Christian community, as instruction generally applicable to all believers, or as instruction applicable to both groups in some sense. In these verses, James addresses issues related to the dangers of speech. Teachers were particularly vulnerable to errors of speech.

3:3–6 Here, James utilizes three images to illustrate that a small thing, like the tongue, can have far-reaching effects. He uses a horse’s bit (James 3:3) and a ship’s rudder (v. 4) to convey that those who have control over their tongues have control over themselves. He also uses the image of fire to convey that the tongue has great potential for destruction and harm (see note on v. 6).

After you read these verses, go back and review Jam 1:26.
26 If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is vain.

When we dig deep into our actions, how well do we mirror Christ?   What does 1:26 say about the religious man and an untamed tongue?  this man’s religion is vain.   How about the first part of 1:26 “If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet…”. 26 If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart,   Now think about Luke 9:23…23 And he said to all, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 9:23  Refers to setting aside one’s interests for the sake of God’s kingdom.
Jesus’ disciples must be willing to follow Him every day, no matter what the cost. See note on Matt 10:38..when our tongue is not tame, are we picking up our cross daily?  What does that mean with reference to our relationship to Christ?

I found 110 references to the word “tongue” in the bible.   It covers a full range of meaning and reference.    If you get a chance, do a word search and read through the verses including the word “tongue”.   Write down some verses that apply to Jam 3 and bring them for discussion Tuesday night.

1 Corinthians 14:19 (NASB)
19 (NASB)  however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

1 Corinthians 14:26 (NASB)
26 (NASB)  What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

1 Corinthians 14:27 (NASB)
27 (NASB)  If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;

Philippians 2:11 (NASB)
11 (NASB)  and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

James 1:26 (NASB)
26 (NASB)  If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless.

James 3:5 (NASB)
5 (NASB)  So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

James 3:6 (NASB)
6 (NASB)  And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

James 3:8 (NASB)
8 (NASB)  But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

1 Peter 3:10 (NASB)
10 (NASB)  For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.

1 John 3:18 (NASB)
18 (NASB)  Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

Revelation 5:9 (NASB)
9 (NASB)  And they *sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

Revelation 13:7 (NASB)
7 (NASB)  It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him.

Revelation 14:6 (NASB)
6 (NASB)  And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people;

If we have time, we will read and review Jam 3:13-18.
James 3:13-18 (NASB)
13 (NASB)  Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.
3:13 wise and understanding The Septuagint, an ancient Greek translation of the ot, often employs this combination of words to describe a person who lives in accordance with the insight given by God (Deut 1:13154:6). People demonstrate wisdom if their deeds reflect God’s commands.
works, with the humility of wisdom Those who are wise should demonstrate their wisdom in how they live, by deeds done with humility.
14  But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 3:14 not boast and tell lies against the truth James likely is admonishing his audience to refrain from sinning against the truth by boasting of their wisdom. Truth may refer to the gospel (James 1:18; 5:19) or, more generally, to that which is not false.
15  This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.
3:15 is earthly Refers to wisdom that is inferior to wisdom from God.
unspiritual The Greek adjective psychikos refers to what is, by nature, human—things not inspired by the Holy Spirit.
demonic Describes the ultimate origin of earthly wisdom (compare to v. 6).
16  For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. 3:16 disorder and every evil practice James describes the evil consequences of false wisdom. Earthly wisdom leads to jealousy and selfish ambition, which can culminate in a troubling situation for Christian communities.
17  But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.
3:17 peaceful, gentle, obedient The virtues James lists are predominantly nonselfish and nonaggressive; those who practice these virtues show greater concern for others than for themselves. They are opposite of the vices described in vv. 14–16.18  And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
3:18 the fruit of righteousness Righteousness and peace appear together often in the Bible (e.g., Pss 72:7; 85:10; Isa 32:17; Heb 12:11).
who make peace True peace is found only in the character of God (Isa 9:6; 2 John 3; 1 Thess 5:23; Phil 4:7, 9). James demonstrates concern about discord and rivalry in the church, and he encourages peace in order to foster this characteristic in the community.

After these verses, go back and read Jam 1-5. 5But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 1:5 wisdom Refers to the knowledge of God’s plans and purposes and the ability to live accordingly. Wise people can identify the nature and purpose of their trials and understand how to overcome them.   Where does scripture tell us true wisdom is found? let him ask of God,

As we’ve discussed, this will be another night of self evaluation and reflection of our faith in Christ.

As usual, bring your thoughts, ideas and questions for discussion.

Grace to you!

Nathan

Christianbook - Everything Christian for Less
If you are wondering where the pages that contained the words "excerpt", "Introducing" or other words indicating I was quoting a book have all gone, I migrated all of them over to Posts and Posted them all on August 18 and August 19 2024. I did that so you could use the search widget that is built in to the blog on the upper right hand corner. You will be happy to know that there are more of them than just the batch that were migrated, there were also lots of posts that contained the same words that did not have to be migrated over, they were there all along. I am really enjoying doing introductions and excerpts because it really makes for powerful and fascinating reading when I do them. You get the feeling you are in a bookstore holding a book in your hand looking at the table of contents and deciding whether or not to buy the book.

Contributions Welcome

The following request applies to any of the christian ministries that are currently getting visitors from my blog:

I am currently blogging: https://webmaster220.blogspot.com
I would like to place a banner on the right side of my home page that promotes your ministry
If I do that and it helps your ministry grow and expand do you have a suggestion as to what type of commission or contribution could be paid to my ministry. The reason I am saying that is there are a lot of ministries out there that are buying advertising space online and yours could be one of them for all I know. I have been an affiliate marketer for years on my blog but no commissions have ever been earned even though I am doing everything required to be done to earn the commissions. My blog readers are just not interested in spending any money on any of the goods or services discussed in my banner ads and text links. To reply, use the contact form below this paragraph Thanks, Rick Livermore - Webmaster220
