As we noted in chapter one, the sayings in Proverbs should be regarded as truisms, not inviolable promises. For example, many verses in Proverbs suggest that calamity belongs to the wicked and prosperity to the righteous. Proverbs 11:8 says, “The righteous is delivered from trouble, and it comes to the wicked instead.” That is generally true as a principle, but it is certainly not a rule without exceptions. We know that the wicked do sometimes prosper (Psalm 73:3; Jeremiah 12:1). And trouble does sometimes come to the righteous (2 Thessalonians 1:4–7). “There is a just man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs life in his wickedness” (Ecclesiastes 7:15). So the truism of Proverbs 11:8 isn’t meant to be a promise that can be claimed in every specific situation.Monday, July 30, 2018
True Wisdom
So the truism of Proverbs 11:8 isn’t meant to be a promise that can be claimed in every specific situation.The project for the week of July 31 2018
1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness.3:1 James asserts that the judgment of teachers will be especially strict because greater responsibility rests on them: They teach God’s word to others (Matt 12:36; 18:6).
Apparently, many desired to teach, possibly because of the authority and prestige that accompanied the role. The nt lists teachers, apostles, and prophets as important roles in the early church (Acts 13:1; Eph 4:11). Unqualified teachers appears to have been a critical issue in the early church (1 John 3:7; 2 Pet 2:1; 1 Tim 6:3; 2 Tim 4:3). 2 For we all make many mistakes, and if any one makes no mistakes in what he says he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses that they may obey us, we guide their whole bodies. 4 Look at the ships also; though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So the tongue is a little member and boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 3:5 Some nt passages portray boasting positively as something to be encouraged (1 Cor 1:28–31), while others portray it negatively as something to be avoided (Jas 4:16).6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell. 3:6 The metaphor of fire would have resonated with James’ first-century audience. Ancients relied on wood or charcoal braziers to cook and heat their homes, and the draft from open windows increased the danger of fire spreading
After you read these verses, go back and review Jam 1:26.
26 If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is vain.
When we dig deep into our actions, how well do we mirror Christ? What does 1:26 say about the religious man and an untamed tongue? this man’s religion is vain. How about the first part of 1:26 “If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet…”. 26 If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, Now think about Luke 9:23…23 And he said to all, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 9:23 Refers to setting aside one’s interests for the sake of God’s kingdom.
Jesus’ disciples must be willing to follow Him every day, no matter what the cost. See note on Matt 10:38..when our tongue is not tame, are we picking up our cross daily? What does that mean with reference to our relationship to Christ?
10 (NASB) Then Moses said to the LORD, "Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue."
5 (NASB) So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, "You shall separate everyone who laps the water with his tongue as a dog laps, as well as everyone who kneels to drink."

9 (NASB) There is nothing reliable in what they say; Their inward part is destruction itself. Their throat is an open grave; They flatter with their tongue.
7 (NASB) His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.
3 (NASB) May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, The tongue that speaks great things;
4 (NASB) Who have said, "With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are our own; who is lord over us?"
3 (NASB) He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
15 (NASB) My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death.

30 (NASB) The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, And his tongue speaks justice.
1 (NASB)
3 (NASB) My heart was hot within me, While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue:
1 (NASB)
19 (NASB) "You let your mouth loose in evil And your tongue frames deceit.
14 (NASB) Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
2 (NASB) Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit.
4 (NASB) You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.
4 (NASB) My soul is among lions; I must lie among those who breathe forth fire, Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows And their tongue a sharp sword.
3 (NASB) Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword. They aimed bitter speech as their arrow,
8 (NASB) So they will make him stumble; Their own tongue is against them; All who see them will shake the head.
17 (NASB) I cried to Him with my mouth, And He was extolled with my tongue.
23 (NASB) That your foot may shatter them in blood, The tongue of your dogs may have its portion from your enemies."
24 (NASB) My tongue also will utter Your righteousness all day long; For they are ashamed, for they are humiliated who seek my hurt.
9 (NASB) They have set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue parades through the earth.
36 (NASB) But they deceived Him with their mouth And lied to Him with their tongue.
2 (NASB) For they have opened the wicked and deceitful mouth against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
172 (NASB) Let my tongue sing of Your word, For all Your commandments are righteousness.
2 (NASB) Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, From a deceitful tongue.
3 (NASB) What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you, You deceitful tongue?
2 (NASB) Then our mouth was filled with laughter And our tongue with joyful shouting; Then they said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."
6 (NASB) May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth If I do not remember you, If I do not exalt Jerusalem Above my chief joy.
4 (NASB) Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, You know it all.
17 (NASB) Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood,
24 (NASB) To keep you from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
20 (NASB) The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver, The heart of the wicked is worth little.
31 (NASB) The mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom, But the perverted tongue will be cut out.
18 (NASB) There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing.
19 (NASB) Truthful lips will be established forever, But a lying tongue is only for a moment.
2 (NASB) The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly.
4 (NASB) A soothing tongue is a tree of life, But perversion in it crushes the spirit.
1 (NASB) The plans of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.
4 (NASB) An evildoer listens to wicked lips; A liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.
21 (NASB) Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
6 (NASB) The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongue Is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death.
23 (NASB) He who guards his mouth and his tongue, Guards his soul from troubles.
15 (NASB) By forbearance a ruler may be persuaded, And a soft tongue breaks the bone.
23 (NASB) The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue, an angry countenance.
28 (NASB) A lying tongue hates those it crushes, And a flattering mouth works ruin.
23 (NASB) He who rebukes a man will afterward find more favor Than he who flatters with the tongue.
26 (NASB) She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
11 (NASB) "Your lips, my bride, drip honey; Honey and milk are under your tongue, And the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.
24 (NASB) Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble And dry grass collapses into the flame, So their root will become like rot and their blossom blow away as dust; For they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
15 (NASB) And the LORD will utterly destroy The tongue of the Sea of Egypt; And He will wave His hand over the River With His scorching wind; And He will strike it into seven streams And make men walk over dry-shod.
11 (NASB) Indeed, He will speak to this people Through stammering lips and a foreign tongue,
27 (NASB) Behold, the name of the LORD comes from a remote place; Burning is His anger and dense is His smoke; His lips are filled with indignation And His tongue is like a consuming fire;
4 (NASB) The mind of the hasty will discern the truth, And the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak clearly.
19 (NASB) You will no longer see a fierce people, A people of unintelligible speech which no one comprehends, Of a stammering tongue which no one understands.
6 (NASB) Then the lame will leap like a deer, And the tongue of the mute will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness And streams in the Arabah.
17 (NASB) "The afflicted and needy are seeking water, but there is none, And their tongue is parched with thirst; I, the LORD, will answer them Myself, As the God of Israel I will not forsake them.
23 (NASB) "I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.
4 (NASB) The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of disciples, That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.
17 (NASB) "No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their vindication is from Me," declares the LORD.
4 (NASB) "Against whom do you jest? Against whom do you open wide your mouth And stick out your tongue? Are you not children of rebellion, Offspring of deceit,
3 (NASB) For your hands are defiled with blood And your fingers with iniquity; Your lips have spoken falsehood, Your tongue mutters wickedness.
3 (NASB) "They bend their tongue like their bow; Lies and not truth prevail in the land; For they proceed from evil to evil, And they do not know Me," declares the LORD.
5 (NASB) "Everyone deceives his neighbor And does not speak the truth, They have taught their tongue to speak lies; They weary themselves committing iniquity.
8 (NASB) "Their tongue is a deadly arrow; It speaks deceit; With his mouth one speaks peace to his neighbor, But inwardly he sets an ambush for him.
18 (NASB) Then they said, "Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah. Surely the law is not going to be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the sage, nor the divine word to the prophet! Come on and let us strike at him with our tongue, and let us give no heed to any of his words."
4 (NASB) The tongue of the infant cleaves To the roof of its mouth because of thirst; The little ones ask for bread, But no one breaks it for them.
26 (NASB) "Moreover, I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be mute and cannot be a man who rebukes them, for they are a rebellious house.
29 (NASB) "Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation or tongue that speaks anything offensive against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego shall be torn limb from limb and their houses reduced to a rubbish heap, inasmuch as there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way."
16 (NASB) They turn, but not upward, They are like a deceitful bow; Their princes will fall by the sword Because of the insolence of their tongue. This will be their derision in the land of Egypt.
12 (NASB) "For the rich men of the city are full of violence, Her residents speak lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
13 (NASB) "The remnant of Israel will do no wrong And tell no lies, Nor will a deceitful tongue Be found in their mouths; For they will feed and lie down With no one to make them tremble."
12 (NASB) Now this will be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth.
33 (NASB) Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;
35 (NASB) And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly.
64 (NASB) And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.
24 (NASB) "And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.'
26 (NASB) 'THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE;
11 (NASB) For it is written, "AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME, AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL GIVE PRAISE TO GOD."
2 (NASB) For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
4 (NASB) One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
9 (NASB) So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.
13 (NASB) Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
14 (NASB) For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
19 (NASB) however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
26 (NASB) What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
27 (NASB) If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;
11 (NASB) and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
26 (NASB) If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless.
5 (NASB) So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!
6 (NASB) And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.
8 (NASB) But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.
10 (NASB) For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.
18 (NASB) Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
9 (NASB) And they *sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
7 (NASB) It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him.
6 (NASB) And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people;
James 3:13-18 (NASB)
13 (NASB) Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 3:13 wise and understanding The Septuagint, an ancient Greek translation of the ot, often employs this combination of words to describe a person who lives in accordance with the insight given by God (Deut 1:13, 15; 4:6). People demonstrate wisdom if their deeds reflect God’s commands.
15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 3:15 is earthly Refers to wisdom that is inferior to wisdom from God.
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. 3:17 peaceful, gentle, obedient The virtues James lists are predominantly nonselfish and nonaggressive; those who practice these virtues show greater concern for others than for themselves. They are opposite of the vices described in vv. 14–16.18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.3:18 the fruit of righteousness Righteousness
and peace appear together often in the Bible (e.g., Pss 72:7; 85:10; Isa 32:17; Heb 12:11).
is found only in the character of God (Isa 9:6; 2 John 3; 1 Thess 5:23; Phil 4:7, 9). James demonstrates concern about discord and rivalry in the church, and he encourages peace in order to foster this characteristic in the community.After these verses, go back and read Jam 1-5. 5But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 1:5 wisdom Refers to the knowledge of God’s plans and purposes and the ability to live accordingly. Wise people can identify the nature and purpose of their trials and understand how to overcome them. Where does scripture tell us true wisdom is found? let him ask of God,

In Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church, top-selling author and Anglican bishop, N.T. Wright tackles the biblical question of what happens after we die and shows how most Christians get it wrong. We do not “go to” heaven; we are resurrected and heaven comes down to earth--a difference that makes all of the difference to how we live on earth. Following N.T. Wright’s resonant exploration of a life of faith in Simply Christian, the award-winning author whom Newsweek calls “the world’s leading New Testament scholar” takes on one of life’s most controversial topics, a matter of life, death, spirituality, and survival for everyone living in the world today. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Despite his status as one of the most influential and intelligent Christian authors of the 20th century, C.S. Lewis never thought of himself as a professional theologian. While he was well-read in many types of literary genres, he did not go to Seminary to obtain a Masters in Theology and study a year of Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek. He was not a Pastor who preached sermons to a congregation for many years but a raw, honest philosopher and professor of literature who wrote as well as any Christian of his time could. He had a gift for clearly articulating his perspectives on a variety of issues. Above all, he was humble, in that he had an honest evaluation of both his strengths and his weaknesses. I believe this is one of the main reasons why he is still so enjoyable to read even after all these years. In terms of his theology, Lewis himself said he was an “Anglican but not especially ‘high,’ nor especially ‘low,’ nor especially anything else.” So the theology of C.S. Lewis is not something one can immediately discover by simply perusing a certain book of his to see exactly where he stands on certain doctrinal issues; it is much more subtle and convoluted than that. But in this book, you will find his different thoughts from his many books about certain Christian doctrines and topics pieced together in an easy-to-follow format (Lewis has written nearly 60 books but none of them are on systematic theology). This book offers very clear depictions of his theology concerning subjects such as the doctrine of inspiration, original sin, human depravity, human origins, evolution, intelligent design, theodicy, love and marriage, redemption, grace, new creation, and grief, as his authentic reaction to God after his wife’s death is conveyed. The final chapters also contain all of his greatest quotes arranged and sorted by topic as well as excerpts, quotes, and summaries from most of his books in a quick, easy-to-read, bullet-point format. These last two sections are a particularly great resource to draw from as you can quickly learn about the main points Lewis conveys in his bestselling books.
