View this email in your browser "Unprecedented times" has been a common phrase used this year as attempts are made to explain the gravity of the situation we find ourselves in with the COVID-19 pandemic. In our difficult days, we can learn important lessons from heroes of faith who have gone before us.  George Müller was well-acquainted with the effects of a pandemic. In the 1830's, cholera devastated the world in which George Müller lived. As George ministered to the sick, trusting in the Lord for his safety, he saw a heartbreaking truth unfold. The death of so many was leaving children to fend for themselves. With no home to turn to, and no one at all to provide them with safety, food, and love, many were left begging on the streets. Driven by a call to care for the least of these, Müller opened his first Orphan House in April of 1836. The first of many, and the beginning of a legacy that lives on today. Müller is a compass that points us to a truth we can draw strength from today, not only because he housed orphans, but because he trusted in God for his every need. Müller put his trust in God for every meal, every pair of shoes, and every bedsheet provided to his Orphan House. He said when facing anxiety, "The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety." "The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety." –George Müller As we face the COVID-19 pandemic, many around us have lost jobs, friends, or family. We may be sick ourselves, or have empty chairs at our own tables. In these days, let us trust in God for our every need. And, let us care for those around us that are hurting and hungry.   Scripture tells us, "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." (James 1:27, ESV) We can, as God's people, trust Him to provide for all of our needs, and we should likewise do all that we can to provide for the needs of those around us. Let us, like Müller, trust the Lord even while facing uncertainty, sickness, and need, knowing that our God is a God who provides, heals, and listens when we pray. View this email in your browser Today, with cell phones, social media, and widespread internet access, we have the whole world at our fingertips. We hear about devastations, suffering, and injustices from all over the globe, and from throughout history, on a daily basis. We can see the weight of the world's suffering with the click of a button.  Harriet Tubman, however, saw it with her own eyes. She experienced the gravity of injustice done to her as a slave—her friends and family members were beaten, subjected to harsh forced labor, and sold to the highest bidder. But her faith in the Lord was steadfast. In all that she endured, she put her trust in God, knowing that He would care for her. Harriet is most well-known for her work in freeing slaves through the Underground Railroad. But, that only came after her own harrowing escape from slavery. Having arrived on northern soil, her first thought was not for her own self-preservation, but how she could serve her neighbor. Driven by her love of others, she worked tirelessly to free the slaves who were suffering at the hands of their owners.  Harriet's story of heroism is written in history books and taught in schools, yet few people understand that it was her Christian faith that inspired her to be so bold. She believed deeply in the power of God, and it was that mighty faith which inspired her to wake up every morning into uncertainty and dangerous situations in order to save her neighbor.  'Twant me, 'twas the Lord. I always told Him, "I trust you. I don't know where to go or what to do, but I expect you to lead me," and He always did. —Harriet Tubman Jesus says that the most important commandment is, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:30-31, ESV)  Harriet's friends and fellow abolitionists said that the source of her strength came from her faith in God who delivers and protects the weak. We too can help our neighbors; we can step into the gaps and show the love of our mighty God to those living in darkness. Under cover of night, Harriet put her life on the line for those who needed freedom. We too have that same power within us. We can feed a hungry neighbor, go to the store for an older friend, help a single mom whose kids are out of school, encourage our healthcare workers, bring groceries to a family in need. "Love thy neighbor" is a beautiful call, it may be a little uncomfortable, but as children of the mighty King, we bring light to others, and do His work in this world. Let us love those around us in any way that we can, putting our trust wholly in the God who has freed us from sin, death, and the power of the devil.
