Dear Friend, I told you about my friend Pieter and how he shared the dire need for God's Word in his Muslim-dominant country of Indonesia. His words were powerful and really spoke to my heart. They underscore the importance of his countrymen having the fullness of God's Word. Without it, they can't break free from the spiritual darkness that oppresses their people. This is why your help to provide translation tools—computer tablets filled with Bible translation resources—is so important. "In some areas of my country, people have been following Christ for many years—for more than 100 years in several areas even. But, there is still a lot of syncretism. Christianity is being mixed with the heretical teaching of the local culture, and men and women are still worshipping other gods. We've heard this from many believers in many areas, and when we ask them "why," their response is that God never speaks in their language. This was heartbreaking for me to hear. It's like when you go to church, you hear the national language being used, and then when you go to the rural districts—where they go to their ancestor's cemetery—they hear their first language . . . the language they are most comfortable with speaking. This is the challenge related to Christian areas around Indonesia—how do you get the gospel in the language of the people's hearts? When the teachings of Christianity really take root in these areas, it is because of the language! And yet, they don't have any of God's Word in their mother tongue. We've witnessed this in many places in Indonesia . . . syncretism is so entrenched because there is no Bible. It is a sad story to hear, but we are ready to work together and collaborate together. We cannot rely on foreigners to come and finalize everything for us like in the past. We must do the work! We must translate God's Word so that more people can mature in their faith and leave behind their local syncretistic practices." Friend, that testimony from Pieter moved me, as I'm sure it moved you, too. Why I became involved with AAPLOG

Dear Webmaster220, Have you ever walked into the exam room to meet a patient who just found out that she is pregnant at a very inopportune time in her life, who is considering abortion? Have you compassionately listened to her distress and then asked her how she feels about abortion without trying to direct her one way or the other? Have you ever noticed how women are hesitant to talk about their abortion history? Have you noticed the comments they make when they do talk about it? "It wasn't what I wanted." "I was young and…(tears)" I've always known that abortion is wrong, I've known it deep in my soul, but early in my career I had trouble articulating my views. Over the years I've come to see that we all know abortion is wrong: We know it, our patients know it, even the politicians know it. But there is a segment within our society that promotes it at all costs, and their reasons are utilitarian. Ends justify their means. If they have their way, we face a very dark future. I became involved with AAPLOG for three reasons: 1.       AAPLOG promotes life-affirming medicine and conscience protection. 2.       Our medical community, indeed, our society needs AAPLOG, which highlights the risks abortion poses to women, risks that are downplayed or completely ignored by utilitarian institutions like ACOG. 3.       My life is enriched as I get to know and share ideas with brilliant, courageous, life-affirming healthcare professionals. Hebrews 9:27, NIV My grandfather was a medical missionary to China for twenty-five years. He established a three-hundred-bed hospital where he treated just about every type of illness and injury that could be named. Many of his Chinese patients were cured of diseases and saved from death by his skilled ministrations. But in time, every single one of the people who went through his hospital died! If all my grandfather had accomplished was to meet the physical needs of these people, his efforts would have been hopelessly futile. But my grandfather was wise. He knew that “man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,” and so all of his ambulatory patients were required to attend chapel every day in the hospital where they were given a Bible lesson and presented with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Those who were unable to leave their beds were visited personally by someone who would share Christ with them. Hundreds, and even thousands, of Chinese men and women received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior at the Love-and-Mercy Hospital in Tsingkiangpu. And so many of my grandfather’s patients who eventually died – still live. As you care for others, make sure you give priority to their spiritual needs.
