Costco announced that it is going to start to limit how much of these items each customer can purchase. The company explained that it is dealing with significant supply chain disruptions, and there just isn't enough to go around without rationing. The return of the toilet paper shortage is a clear sign that the economy just is not recovering as smoothly as many had expected. The supply chain disruptions were supposed to be temporary growing pains as the economy reopened after vaccinations. But instead of fading, they appear to be getting worse. At this week's FOMC meeting, Jerome Powell attributed the upward revisions to the inflation forecasts of Fed officials to greater supply bottlenecks, which he said may be "with us for the next few months and into the next year." As Michelle Meyer at Bank of America pointed out in a recent note to clients, supply remains constrained for both goods and labor, and there is not much sign of the constraints easing. Which makes it more than a bit weird that the Fed's economic projections for next year have inflation falling all the way down to 2.2 percent (which is barely a tenth of a point higher than they saw it in June.) Jeremy Seigel of the Wharton School on Friday told CNBC that he doesn't find that forecast credible. "Everyone knows we're going to have much more inflation," he said. Next week we'll get a test of whether everyone knows that when both the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index and the Conference's Board's consumer confidence index are released. At the end of the week, we'll get actual inflation data in the form of the Personal Consumption Price Index. This is expected to rise 0.3 percent month over month, a tick down from the previous month's 0.4 percent. That, however, may be too optimistic. The median price of a new home sold in August was $390,900 for the second month in a row. That is the highest price on record and 20 percent above last August's level. The average price of a new home in 2020 was $336,000. "After the volatility of 2020, with significant declines for new home sales in the spring followed by an unsustainable rebound during the second half of the year, new home sales have cooled somewhat," said National Association of Home Builders Chief Economist Robert Dietz. "Home prices are up 20% from a year ago due to higher construction costs, and these price hikes are a risk for housing affordability as we approach the end of the year." (John 1:14) As we come to the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles this Tuesday, the streets will erupt with joyful dancing for "Simchat Torah," the joy of the Torah. Traditionally, the yearly reading cycle of the Torah restarts at the end of Sukkot, and for many Jewish people, the Fall Feasts all point towards the Torah. But while we are commanded to look back and remember God's meeting with His people at Sinai, the feasts also point to a deeper meaning: the Word who became flesh and tabernacled among us. We are invited to the greatest wedding feast of all time, and His banner over us is love. Dr. Erez Soref, President of ONE FOR ISRAEL THE 8TH DAY OF THE ASSEMBLY The last and greatest day of the feast Shemini Atzeret is translated as the Eighth Day of the Assembly. It’s sort of strange that there’s an eighth day of the assembly, given that Sukkot is a week-long feast, but in the very passage that dictates there are seven days of Sukkot, we see God also mandating the eighth day (Leviticus 23:36-39). The number seven and the word seventh crop up over and over again in the instructions regarding Sukkot, but the number eight also has significance. Sukkot takes place in the seventh month which is now known as Tishrei. Things got switched up in Babylon. An ironic fact, given that babel is the Hebrew word to confuse! The word Tishrei is an ancient Akkadian word from Babylon meaning “beginning.” But back in King Solomon’s time, before the exile, the seventh month was known as "Eithanim." What does "Eithanim" mean? In Jewish communities there will be whoops and shouts of joy, singing and dancing and much merriment, as Torah scrolls of the first five books of the Bible are held up high and paraded around for all to see and enjoy. Join us in enjoying the Torah throughout the year! It is the end of the Feast of Sukkot, and also the end of the yearly cycle of reading through the Torah, portion by portion, and so also the beginning of the next year’s cycle. (You can join us in the weekly readings too – check out our “Weekly Torah Portion” section!)  The last day of Sukkot has become known as “Shemini Atzeret” (8th day of the Assembly) or “Simchat Torah” (Joy of the Torah).
