As a non-Jew recording the words and works of Jesus’ life, Luke demonstrates a special sensitivity to other “outsiders” with whom Jesus came into contact. For instance, Luke records five events involving women that are not mentioned in the other Gospels. In first-century Jewish culture, women were usually treated as second-class citizens with few of the rights men had. But Jesus crossed those barriers, and Luke showed the special care Jesus had for women. Jesus treated all people with equal respect. The above passages tell of his encounters with women.
Verse fourteen. The apostle has up to this point bent all his efforts at dissuading the Galatians from coming under bondage to law again. Now he exhorts them to love one another. If they do this he says, they will fulfill the law. But how are we to understand this? In Romans 8:4 Paul speaks of the fact that the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in the Christian by the Holy Spirit. There is therefore a sense in which the word law is used other than in the legalistic sense in which Paul has used it throughout this letter so far. It is that sense in which it is conceived of as divine law consisting of ethical principals and standards that inhere in the being of God, and represent those things that go to make up right conduct on the part of man.
Paul’s statement becomes intelligible and consistent when we recognize the following points; first, that believers through their new relation to the Lord Jesus, are released from the whole law as statutes, and from the obligation to obey its statutes, second, that all which God’s law as an expression of His will requires, is included in love, and third, when the believer acts on the principle of love, he is fulfilling in his actions toward God, his fellowman, and himself, all that the Mosaic law would require of him in his position in life were that law in force. The statutes of the law, the believer will incidently obey so far as love itself requires such a course of action of him, and in no case will he obey them as statutes. Thus, the individual is released from one law consisting of a set of ethical principles to which was attached blessing for obedience and punishment in the case of disobedience, a law that gave him neither the desire nor the power to obey its commands, and is brought under another law, the law of love, which is not a set of written commandments but an ethical and spiritual dynamic, produced in the heart of the yielded believer by the Holy Spirit, who gives him both the desire and the power to live a life in which the dominating principle is love, God’s love, which exercises a stronger and stricter control over the heart and is far more efficient at putting out sin in the life than the legalizers think the thunders of Sinai ever were.
The word fulfilled is from pleroō (πλεροω) which means “to make full,” and when used of a task or a course of action, “to fully perform,” here, “to fully obey.” The verb is in the perfect tense, and the translation could read, “The whole law stands fully obeyed.” The idea is not that the whole law is embraced in or summed up in the act of loving one’s neighbor as one’s self, but that in doing that, one is complying with the whole law and its demands.
Translation. For the whole law in one utterance stands fully obeyed: namely in this, Love your neighbor as you do yourself.
Jesus traveled to Nain and met a funeral procession leaving the village. A widow’s only son had died, but Jesus brought the young man back to life. This miracle, recorded only in Luke, reveals Jesus’ compassion for people’s needs. Luke 7:11–15 NIV The widow’s situation was serious. She had lost her husband, and now her only son had died—her last means of support. The crowd of mourners would go home, and she would be left penniless and alone. The widow was probably past the age of childbearing and would not marry again. Unless a relative came to her aid, her future was bleak. She would be an easy prey for swindlers, and she would likely be reduced to begging for food. In fact, as Luke repeatedly emphasizes, this woman was just the kind of person Jesus had come to help—and help her he did. Jesus has great compassion on your pain, and he has the power to bring hope out of any tragedy. Luke 7:11–17 NIV This story illustrates salvation. The whole world was dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1), just as the widow’s son was dead. Being dead, we could do nothing to help ourselves—we couldn’t even ask for help. But God had compassion on us, and he sent Jesus to raise us to life with him (Ephesians 2:4–7). The dead man did not earn his second chance at life, and we cannot earn our new life in Christ. But we can accept God’s gift of life, praise God for it, and use our lives to do his will.
But it was in vain that I looked for the light which was to be shed from this source on the historical and prophetical books. On the contrary, my enjoyment of the latter was marred by the Law; it did not bring them any nearer me, but intruded itself uneasily, like a ghost that makes a noise indeed but is not visible and really effects nothing. Even where there were points of contact between it and them, differences also made themselves felt, and I found it impossible to give a candid decision in favour of the priority of the Law. Dimly I began to perceive that throughout there was between them all the difference that separates two wholly distinct worlds. Yet, so far from attaining clear conceptions, I only fell into deeper confusion, which was worse confounded by the explanations of Ewald.’ He then learned of Graf’s hypothesis, which placed the Law later than the Prophets, and this suggested at once a solution of his difficulties. The significance of Wellhausen’s work lies not in the originality of the thesis he maintains, to which he lays no claim, but in the fact that in solving his own difficulties he showed others how to interpret the progressive religious development in the Old Testament, and he worked out the critical theory afresh so thoroughly and presented it in such a clear and intelligible form that he carried conviction to scholars in all countries, and since the publication of the famous Prolegomena there has been a growing consensus of opinion in favour of the critical hypothesis he restated. It is worth while, however, to point out again that this hypothesis of the combination of four documents in the Pentateuch and of the priority of the Prophets to the Law was not the work of any one man. We have seen the gradual development of literary criticism as the result of conclusions reached by various scholars working on different lines and in different countries; and the position established by historical criticism was reached in the same way, by various scholars working independently, as Wellhausen points out. ‘The hypothesis usually associated with Graf’s name is really not his, but that of his teacher Eduard Reuss. It would be still more correct to call it after Leopold George and Wilhelm Vatke, who, independent alike of Reuss and of each other, were the first to give it literary currency. All three, again, are disciples of Martin Lebrecht de Wette, the epoch-making pioneer of historical criticism in this field. He indeed did not himself succeed in reaching a sure position, but he was the first clearly to perceive and point out how disconnected are the alleged starting-point of Israel’s history and that history itself.’ The critical hypothesis was explained lucidly and fully for English readers by Robertson Smith in The Old Testament in the Jewish Church; while a full critical introduction to the Old Testament with detailed analyses showing the extent of the various documents in the Pentateuch was written by Driver, Literature of the Old Testament, still the standard English book of reference on this subject.
If you are wondering where the pages that contained the words "excerpt", "Introducing" or other words indicating I was quoting a book have all gone, I migrated all of them over to Posts and Posted them all on August 18 and August 19 2024. I did that so you could use the search widget that is built in to the blog on the upper right hand corner. You will be happy to know that there are more of them than just the batch that were migrated, there were also lots of posts that contained the same words that did not have to be migrated over, they were there all along. I am really enjoying doing introductions and excerpts because it really makes for powerful and fascinating reading when I do them. You get the feeling you are in a bookstore holding a book in your hand looking at the table of contents and deciding whether or not to buy the book.
