Run to the Cry - a Hebrews Word Study

(Heb 2:14–18) Therefore, since the children share in common with one another blood and flesh, He himself also partook with them in the same, in order that through the aforementioned death He might render inoperative the one having the dominion of death, that is, the devil, and effect the release of those, as many as who by reason of fear of death through the entire course of their lives were held in bondage. For, as is well known, He does not take hold of angels for the purpose of helping them, but of the offspring of Abraham He takes hold, with a view to succoring them. For this reason it was an obligation for Him in all things to be made like His brethren, in order that He might become a compassionate and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, with a view to offering that sacrifice for the sins of the people that would perfectly meet the demands of God’s justice. For in that He suffered, having himself been tempted and put to the test, He is able to run to the cry of those who are being tempted and put to the test, and bring them aid. -- New Testament An Expanded Translation Wuest, K. S.[1]

Hebrews 2:18 (WWSGNT):
(2:18) The emphasis in this verse is not upon the fact that the Lord Jesus suffered, but upon the fact that He was tempted. The order of the Greek words and their translation are as follows: “For in that which He suffered, having Himself been tempted.” The words “in that which He suffered” qualify the word “tempted.” The phrase explains in what the temptation consisted. The word “tempted” is the translation of peirazomai (πειραζομαι), which referred first to the action of putting someone to the test to see what good or evil is in the one tested, and second, because so many broke down under the test and committed sin, the word came to mean a “solicitation to do evil.” Both meanings are in view here. Our Lord in His incarnation as the Last Adam, was put to the test and was also solicited to do evil (Matt. 4:1–11). Here the inspired writer has in view the testings and solicitations to do evil that were associated with His expiatory sufferings on the Cross. For examples of these see Matthew 4:89, where Satan tempts our Lord to go around the Cross and accept from his hands the world-dominion He is yet to have. See Matthew 16:2122, where Peter, the unconscious tool of Satan dismisses as absurd the idea that Jesus as Messiah should die at the hands of the leaders of Israel; and Matthew 26:36–46, where in Gethsemane His sinless human and at the same time divine shrinking back from the prospect of being made sin and of losing the fellowship of the Father caused Him to pray, “If it be possible, let this cup pass from Me.”
But see how He met each temptation. In the case of Satan tempting Him to worship him, He who had obeyed as a habit of life the words of Deuteronomy 10:20, now had because of that fact, reserves of spiritual power in His sinless humanity with which to say NO to Satan. The believer has the same resource. When Peter tempted Him to put the Cross away, He recognized Satan’s hand in it all, and withstood the temptation, choosing the way that savored of God, not man. The believer has the same resource. With his spiritual vision sharpened by the Holy Spirit through the Word, he is able to detect Satan’s machinations and swing out away from them, keeping in the path of God’s leading. In the garden of Gethsemane, our Lord was victor when He said, “nevertheless, not my will but thine be done.” He chose death to self rather than disobedience to the Father’s wishes. That is what Paul is speaking of in Philippians 2:5–810. The believer has the same resource. When he comes to the place where he is dead to self, where self has ceased its imperious demands for satisfaction, where nothing matters except the sweet will of God, then he finds an arsenal of ammunition which he can hurl as an effective broadside against temptation. In all temptations the Lord Jesus stands ready to give aid to the sorely tried saint. He understands all about it, not only in His omniscience, but also experientially, for He has experienced all this Himself. The word “succor” is the translation of boetheo (βοεθεο) which means “to run to the cry of those in danger and bring them aid.” How precious to know that when we are being tempted, the Lord Jesus always stands ready, eager to run to our cry and bring us aid.
Translation. For in that He suffered, having himself been tempted and put to the test, He is able to run to the cry of those who are being tempted and put to the test, and bring them aid.---Word Studies in the Greek New Testament, for the English Reader by Kenneth S Wuest [2]

§ 2:14–18 Christ is presented first as our Redeemer and Warrior who defeats our oppressor and sets us free, then as our merciful High Priest who helps us in our trials.

§ 2:14 flesh and blood. This is an idiomatic way of saying “human.” The same Greek phrase is seen at Matt. 16:171 Cor. 15:50Gal. 1:16Eph. 6:12; it may emphasize the limitations of the human condition.

shared in the same. That is, the same humanity, a phrase stressing the completeness of the Son’s incarnation. In order for Christ to triumph over death and the devil by enduring God’s judgment upon sinners, it was necessary for Him to share their “flesh and blood” nature.

him who had the power of death. Having tempted humanity to sin, the devil then acts as an accuser (Rev. 12:10), demanding that a just punishment be exacted; and “the wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23; cf. 1 Cor. 15:56). The devil’s power to kill is destroyed only when our sin has been punished—in Christ’s death. Then his accusations have no ground (Col. 2:1415).

§ 2:16 This verse resumes the contrast of v. 5. The background is Is. 41:8–14, where Israel is called “descendants of Abraham,” whom the Lord “will hold” and whom He promises to “help” (Is. 41:13; cf. Heb. 2:18), so they need not “fear” (Is. 41:10Heb. 2:15; cf. 13:56). On Abraham and his descendants, see 6:15–17; 11:9; Rom. 4:11–189:78Gal. 3:29.

give aid. Another translation is “takes on” or “lays hold of,” as of “taking on” human nature (text note) in the Incarnation. Either way, the point is that the sort of incarnation described in v. 14 is determined by the sort of creatures whom God wills to save. These are human beings, and the eternal Word must be incarnated as a human being: “the Word became flesh” (John 1:14).

§ 2:17 He had to be made like His brethren. Only the One who had been tested in every way as we are could be the merciful High Priest (4:15; 5:2). Only the One who had responded to every test in perfect obedience could be the faithful High Priest, without sin (4:15; 7:26) and worthy to offer Himself as the unblemished sacrifice (9:14).

merciful and faithful High Priest. This echoes the prophecy that pronounced judgment on Eli’s house, of Aaron’s family, and the coming of a faithful High Priest who would minister forever (1 Sam. 2:35). The faithfulness (3:6) and mercy of Christ (5:2) are explained in what follows.

make propitiation for. This term means that He bore God’s wrath and curse that rested on “the people” who sinned (Rom. 3:2526). See “Christ the Mediator”at 1 Tim. 2:5.

§ 2:18 He Himself has suffered. See “The Humanity of Jesus”at 2 John 7. -- Reformation Study Bible-ESV by R C Sproul (Editor), Keith Mathison (Editor) [3]

Having therefore a High Priest, a great One, One who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us be holding fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who is not able to enter experientially into a fellow feeling with our infirmities, but one who has been tempted and tested in all points like as we are, without sin. Let us be coming therefore with boldness to the throne of grace, in order that we may procure mercy and find grace for seasonable help.New Testament An Expanded Translation by K.S.Wuest[6]

§ 4:14–16 The sobering thought of our complete exposure before God draws us to the merciful High Priest who, having been tempted, can help us in our weakness (themes announced in 2:17, 18). An exhortation to “hold fast our confession” (v. 14) caps the preceding section, and an invitation to approach God’s throne introduces the discussion of Christ as the merciful High Priest.

§ 4:14 passed through the heavens. Christ was raised, ascended, and sits at God’s right hand (8:1), where He ministers as our great and eternal High Priest (7:26; 9:11, 24).

the Son of God. See note 1:5 (cf. 5:5).

§ 4:15 in all points tempted. This is a vivid restatement of 2:17, 18. As temptation is again mentioned, the author is careful to add that Christ was “without sin” despite His knowledge of our weakness. See theological note “The Sinlessness of Jesus.”

§ 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly. Confident access to God is a priestly privilege reserved for those who have been purified from sin’s pollution by Jesus’ sacrifice (7:19; 10:19, 22), and so can offer sacrifices of thanksgiving pleasing to God (12:28; 13:15, 16). On the priestly privilege of Christian believers see Rom. 5:12Eph. 2:13–221 Pet. 2:4–10.

In answer to the question “Was Christ able not to sin, or not able to sin?” the Scripture teaches Christ was not able to sin. Since he possessed two natures (1 Th 4:16n), a human nature and a divine nature, which nature was in control? Logically, the divine nature must have been in control of the human nature. Since Jesus was both God (Jn +*20:29n) and man (Ph 2:7.1 Ti 2:5), and it is impossible for God to sin or to be tempted with evil (Ti 1:2n. Ja ✓1:13), Jesus could not sin, neither could he be tempted with evil, for there was nothing of our sinful nature in him to which Satan could appeal (Jn 14:30). Though he was tempted in all points like as we, yet this temptation was never to sin. His human nature was subject to weariness and hunger, and the suffering of death, but never sin. Had Jesus been able to sin while on earth in his human nature, but merely did not, then he is still able to sin in the human nature which he still possesses, and the divine plan of redemption is ever in jeopardy—a doctrine incompatible with Scripture. Thus the significance of the qualifying phrase “without sin” can be understood to teach Jesus not only did not sin, was able not to sin, but, possessed of a divine nature, could not sin. He 7:269:28g. Treasury - Heb 4:14
(English Standard Version)
a great

Heb 2:17 — Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Heb 3:1 — Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,
Heb 3:5 — Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later,
Heb 3:6 — but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
that is
Heb 1:3 — He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Heb 6:20 — where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Heb 7:25 — Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

Heb 7:26 — For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

Heb 8:1 — Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,

Heb 9:12 — he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

Heb 9:24 — For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

Heb 10:12 — But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,

Heb 12:2 — looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Mk 16:19 — So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

Lk 24:51 — While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

Ac 1:11 — and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Ac 3:21 — whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

Ro 8:34 — Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

Jesus

Heb 1:2 — but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

Heb 1:8 — But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.

Mk 1:1 — The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

let

Heb 2:1 — Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

Heb 3:6 — but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

Heb 3:14 — For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

Heb 10:23 — Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Treasury - Heb 4:15

we have

Heb 5:2 — He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.

Ex 23:9 — “You shall not oppress a sojourner. You know the heart of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Isa 53:4 — Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

Isa 53:5 — But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Hos 11:8 — How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender.

Mt 8:16 — That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.

Mt 8:17 — This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

Mt 12:20 — a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory;

Php 2:7 — but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

Php 2:8 — And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

tempted

Heb 2:17 — Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Heb 2:18 — For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Lk 4:2 — for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.

Lk 22:28 — “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials,

yet

Heb 7:26 — For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

Isa 53:9 — And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Jn 8:46 — Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

2Co 5:21 — For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1Pe 2:22 — He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.

1Jn 3:5 — You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.

come

Heb 10:19-23 — Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Heb 13:6 — So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Ro 8:15-17 — For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Eph 2:18 — For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.

Eph 3:12 — in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.

the throne

Heb 9:5 — Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Ex 25:17-22 — “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold. Two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth. 18 And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. 19 Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end. Of one piece with the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. 20 The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be. 21 And you shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I shall give you. 22 There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.

Lev 16:2 — and the LORD said to Moses, “TELL Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.

1Ch 28:11 — Then David gave Solomon his son the plan of the vestibule of the temple, and of its houses, its treasuries, its upper rooms, and its inner chambers, and of the room for the mercy seat;

Isa 27:11 — When its boughs are dry, they are broken; women come and make a fire of them. For this is a people without discernment; therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them; he who formed them will show them no favor.

Isa 55:6 — “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near;

Isa 55:7 — let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Mt 7:7-11 — “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

2Co 12:8-10 — Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Php 4:6 — do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Php 4:7 — And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

1Pe 2:10 — Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. [9]

Contributions Welcome

The following request applies to any of the christian ministries that are currently getting visitors from my blog:

I am currently blogging: https://webmaster220.blogspot.com
I would like to place a banner on the right side of my home page that promotes your ministry
If I do that and it helps your ministry grow and expand do you have a suggestion as to what type of commission or contribution could be paid to my ministry. The reason I am saying that is there are a lot of ministries out there that are buying advertising space online and yours could be one of them for all I know. I have been an affiliate marketer for years on my blog but no commissions have ever been earned even though I am doing everything required to be done to earn the commissions. My blog readers are just not interested in spending any money on any of the goods or services discussed in my banner ads and text links. To reply, use the contact form below this paragraph Thanks, Rick Livermore - Webmaster220
