In hindsight, the collapse of consumer sentiment in the early weeks of November seems almost inevitable. Prices are rising rapidly, real wages are falling, and shortages are making some consumer goods scarce.      November 12, 2021   Today's Top Stories From the Breitbart News Desk In hindsight, the collapse of consumer sentiment in the early weeks of November seems almost inevitable. Prices are rising rapidly, real wages are falling, and shortages are making some consumer goods scarce. No wonder people think that their current circumstances are pretty crummy right now. The University of Michigan's Index of Consumer Sentiment fell to the lowest level since 2011. Which is to say, consumer sentiment is now worse than at the height of the pandemic — worse than when we shut down the economy and told people to avoid seeing friends and family. The details are telling. People feel slightly worse about current conditions than they did in April of 2020, but their expectations are much worse. Last April, the expectations gauge stood at 70. This month, it has tumbled to 62.8. That's a vote of no confidence in the Biden administration or the Federal Reserve to do anything about the acceleration of prices. That's not just our opinion. Here's the University of Michigan's Richard Curtin, the guru of the consumer sentiment survey for decades, coming to the same conclusion: "Consumer sentiment fell in early November to its lowest level in a decade due to an escalating inflation rate and the growing belief among consumers that no effective policies have yet been developed to reduce the damage from surging inflation." One reason for that belief may be the insistence of the Biden administration that the best way to deal with new problems like inflation, skyrocketing gas prices, and the threat of a coronavirus resurgence is to pass the policies the Biden administration was already pushing anyway. This is such obvious bunk that it manages to insult the people the administration is trying to manipulate while also making it clear that the White House has no plan for inflation at all. The focus next week will be on retail sales, which are expected to improve from the prior month. But can retail sales really improve while consumer sentiment is crashing? It's possible that sales will climb because prices are higher and sales are reported in nominal dollar figures. What's more, many Americans are likely attempting to get their holiday shopping done early to avoid still higher prices and get ahead of shortages. – Alex Marlow & John Carney Breitbart News Network     TOP STORY   A Record 4.4 Million Americans Quit Their Jobs in September A record number of Americans quit their jobs in September, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS] Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey [JOLTS] report released on Friday. According to the report, 4.4 million Americans — three percent — chose to voluntarily leave their place of employment. The number rose from 2.9 percent in August and 2.7 percent in July. Federal Reserve Economic Data [FRED] shows September's number is the highest number on record since December of 2000.
