Not only were these numbers worse than expected, they were worse than the worst expectations. The top of the range of forecasts in Econoday's survey was 0.7 percent month-to-month and 5.9 percent annually. As you know, the numbers came in at 0.9 percent and 6.2 percent. The White House decided to admit that inflation was a "real problem." Speaking at the Baltimore harbor, President Joe Biden promised to make inflation fighting a top priority and expressed empathy with households facing higher prices. So far, however, his efforts mostly seem to consist of pushing the same Build Back Better bill he was pushing when the White House was insisting inflation would fade away real soon. Left-wing advocacy groups went in a different direction, declaring that inflation was actually a good thing for the economy. At the same time, however, they described inflation as "mildly elevated" and just a result of "one-time price increases." Never mind what you see in the grocery stores, all this inflation talk is just "GOP inflation disinformation," they claimed. Neither of those narratives appears to be working, at least not when it comes to Sen. Joe Manchin. The West Virginia Democrat declared that Washington, DC, can "no longer ignore inflation." "By all accounts, the threat posed by record inflation to the American people is not 'transitory' and is instead getting worse. From the grocery store to the gas pump, Americans know the inflation tax is real and DC can no longer ignore the economic pain Americans feel every day," Manchin said. Exactly right.
