10 Key Bible Verses on Hope

This Is a Must Read Article from Our Friends at Crossway. Sermonsearch exists to resource preachers & teachers with materials like sermon outlines, illustrations, preaching ideas, and more.

As believers, we put our ultimate hope not in this world, but in what is unseen. We trust and wait expectantly for God to usher forth the promised King and kingdom. Be encouraged by these verses and commentary adapted from the ESV Study Bible.

Romans 5:2–5

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

The grace in which we stand refers to the secure position of the believer's standing (as a blessing of justification), and the hope of the glory of God refers to the promise that Christians will be glorified and perfected at the last day—a hope that results in joy.

The people of God rejoice not only in future glory but in present trials and sufferings, not because trials are pleasant but because they produce a step-by-step...

We may have only weeks to act before a variant coronavirus dominates the US

It's an emergency

Good morning! Today: experts are sounding the alarm that the US is running out of time to stop a new covid-19 variant overwhelming the country, and how agriculture tech is finally starting to deliver on its promise. Get your friends to sign up here to get The Download every day.

We may have only weeks to act before a variant coronavirus dominates the US

A dire situation: The US may face a rapidly closing window to bring a suspected extra-contagious variant of covid-19 under control. If the variant strain, first spotted in the United Kingdom, is as infectious as some suspect (British scientists estimate it’s 50% to 74% more transmissible) it could dominate US case numbers by March, send covid-19 deaths to unprecedented levels, and collide with the rollout of vaccines.

Already circulating: More than 20 countries have now spotted the variant, including the US. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of January 11 there were 72 confirmed variant cases in 10 states. That’s a drop in the bucket given that the US is confirming over 200,000 cases of covid per day. Yet the variant is likely more widespread than it appears, is one of several variants that have been identified, and the US still lacks the ability to adequately monitor changes to the virus.

What’s needed: Some scientific leaders say the US should now consider a coordinated national lockdown period, and step up the pace of vaccinations. Some are comparing 2021 to last spring—that is, we are facing a short window to clamp down on the variant before it, too, spirals out of control. Read the full story.

How technology might finally start telling farmers things they didn’t already know

As a machine operator for the robotics startup FarmWise, Diego Alcántar spends each day walking behind a hulking robot that resembles a driverless Zamboni, helping it learn to do the work of a 30-person weeding crew.

He works in a gigantic cauliflower field in the hills outside Santa Maria, at the southern end of the vast checkerboard of vegetable farms that line California’s central coast. Cooled by coastal mists rolling off the Pacific, the Salinas valley is sometimes called America’s Salad Bowl. Together with two adjacent counties to the south, the area around Salinas produces the vast majority of lettuce grown in the US during the summer months, along with most of the cauliflower, celery, and broccoli, and a good share of the berries.

The robot straddled a planted bed three rows wide with its wheels in adjacent furrows. Alcántar followed a few paces back, holding an iPad with touch-screen controls like a joystick’s.

Periodically, Alcántar stopped the machine and kneeled in the furrow, bending to examine a “kill”—spots where the robot’s array of cameras and blades had gone ever so slightly out of alignment and uprooted the seedling itself. Taking an iPhone out of his pocket, Alcántar pulled up a Slack channel called #field-de-bugging and sent a note to a colleague 150 miles away about five kills in a row, with a hypothesis about the cause (latency between camera and blade) and a time stamp so he could find the images and see what had gone wrong.

It isn’t a stretch to think that one day, no person will ever lay a hand to the ground around these seedlings. The term “ag tech” was coined at a conference in Salinas almost 15 years ago; boosters have been promising a surge of gadgets and software that would remake the farming industry for at least that long. And although ag tech startups have tended to have an easier time finding investors than customers, the boosters may finally be on to something. Read the full story.

We can still have nice things

A place for comfort, fun and distraction in these weird times. (Got any ideas? Drop me a line or tweet 'em at me.)

+ This AI will judge your Spotify. Watch out though, it's brutal (and if you want tips on how to expand your listening, scroll to the end of the 10 links section.)
+ A man has given away 500 free pizzas by lowering them from his apartment window. What a champion. (WP $)
+ A short film of people psyching themselves up (or out) of jumping from a 10 meter pool platform. SO gripping.
+ What is it like to live in the past? These people can tell you (sort of).
+ A Brazilian church created a mini waxwork museum. You do not need to understand Portugese to find the commentary utterly hilarious.
+ Did you know you can make gnocchi from pretty much any vegetable?

Some people might not associate the word “trust” with artificial intelligence (AI).

Stefan Jockusch, Vice President of Strategy at Siemens Digital Industries Software, is not one of them.

AI can improve production speed, take away tedious tasks from creative engineers, and make products customers want, explains Jockusch.

He gives the example of Apple’s iPhones and its facial recognition software—technology that has been tested “millions and millions of times” and produced just a few failures.

Contributions Welcome

The following request applies to any of the christian ministries that are currently getting visitors from my blog:

I am currently blogging: https://webmaster220.blogspot.com
I would like to place a banner on the right side of my home page that promotes your ministry
If I do that and it helps your ministry grow and expand do you have a suggestion as to what type of commission or contribution could be paid to my ministry. The reason I am saying that is there are a lot of ministries out there that are buying advertising space online and yours could be one of them for all I know. I have been an affiliate marketer for years on my blog but no commissions have ever been earned even though I am doing everything required to be done to earn the commissions. My blog readers are just not interested in spending any money on any of the goods or services discussed in my banner ads and text links. To reply, use the contact form below this paragraph Thanks, Rick Livermore - Webmaster220
