When fear and failure strike

SHALOM!
“Humble yourselves in the sight of Adonai, and He shall lift you up.” (James 4:10)
It's all too easy for us as believers to fall into the trap of thinking our faith depends on our good behavior. We often need the reminder that we are weak and flawed, and that we all fail. We may have grand ideas of how strong and faithful we may be under trial, but the good news is that God knows us and loves us anyway. As Psalm 103 graciously reminds us, He remembers that we are dust! All our failures - past, present and future - have been paid for on the cross. We are forgiven and Jesus invites us to draw strength from Him for each new day to live in a way we simply cannot do without Him.

PETER'S WAKE UP CALL
FAILURE AND RESTORATION
A devotional from Dr. Seth Postell

"So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread" (John 21:9).

The reference to a "charcoal fire" seems rather superfluous, an irrelevant detail in the story. But it isn't. It serves as a strategic reminder of another charcoal fire where Peter denied the Lord three times (John 18:18). Peter's three confessions of his love for the Savior while sitting next to this charcoal fire (John 21:15–17) are a beautiful assurance of restoration for all of us who are wrestling over the sins of our past. Jesus isn't afraid of our past failures, as terrible as they may be. He wants to meet us in these broken places, to reassure us of his love and forgiveness, and to reignite our love for and commitment to him!

"If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, that You may be feared" (Psalm 130:3-4).
WHY IS IT GOOD TO FEAR GOD?
How healthy fear combats all other fears

It seems odd to many people that we are supposed to fear God. Surely God is good and compassionate, righteous and just - what is there to be afraid of? Many interpret the idea to be simply one of great respect and appreciation, awe and reverence. But surely not actual fear? The words are explained away and brushed under the carpet as meaning something far less intimidating.

Yet the fear of God is absolutely foundational to a right relationship with Him. When this is out of place, the whole building is on shaky ground. This is why we're repeatedly told throughout the Scriptures that it comes first - at the beginning.

"This has been, so far, the best study about the book of Job I ever heard."

"Dr. Broshi that was a wonderful examination of the gospel of Job. I certainly see this book in a totally different light now. I love your enthusiasm in teaching this book. Thank you so much for sharing."

"Interesting! It's the first time I heard of this context and approach to the book of Job."
