Terminology Tuesday: Christian Platonism By David Montoya on Nov 17, 2020 09:00 am Christian Platonism is that complex strand of theology which is influenced by the philosophy of Plato (427–347 BC) and Plato’s successors. Hellenistic influence over later Jewish thought, particularly Philo, ensured that Christianity was directly or indirectly affected by Platonic philosophy from its inception. This clear influence of Plato and Platonism can be traced at least as far back as Clement of Alexandria and Origen. Alongside the Cappadocian Fathers of the East, Augustine of Hippo is often identified as the most prominent Christian Platonist of the patristic period. His popularity amongst both Catholic and Protestant theologians during the Reformation ensured the lasting influence of Platonist thought within Christian theology. Platonism was particularly influential in the work of Christian mystics of the East (Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopogite, John Climacus, c. 570–c. 649) and West (John Scotus Eriugena, Bernard of Clairvaux). It is impossible to state in brief compass the facts relating to the life of Mani (or, acc. to the usual W. form of his name, ‘Manichaeus’), the founder of Manichaeism, as the relatively late sources of his life are mutually contradictory in their details. The chief sources are: (1) the writings of certain of the Church Fathers, notably St *Ephraem Syrus, *Titus of Bostra, *Serapion of Thmuis, and esp. St *Augustine of Hippo (who was himself a Manichee for nine years before his conversion); (2) a report of a reputed dialogue between Mani and a bishop, Archelaus, the so-called ‘Acta Archelai’, which was issued by one Hegemonius; (3) references in various medieval Muslim historians who came across Manichaeism in Babylonia, notably Al-Biruni; (4) a collection of Manichaean documents, discovered in 1904–5 at Turfan and elsewhere in Chinese Turkestan, and published by F.
