Where do you draw strength from in challenging times? We all have difficult days, but God has this way of giving exactly what we need when we need it to help us get through them. It's been a particularly challenging week for me, and in times like these, I gain strength through prayer, reciting God's Word in my heart, and fellowship with my friends and family. I also find myself leaning into the lessons that I learned from the godliest person I have had the privilege of knowing.
Sabina Wurmbrand, the wife of Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, taught my heart things that still feed it today. She, like Richard, spent years in prison for her faith in her homeland of Romania, and she co-founded the ministry The Voice of the Martyrs.
When I struggled to start a new project, she encouraged me to not despise the small beginnings.
When I embarrassed myself, she encouraged me to press on.
When I failed, she reminded me that the darkness of the night makes the sunrise all the more beautiful.
When I failed, she reminded me that the darkness of the night makes the sunrise all the more beautiful.
Sabina spoke with a soft voice, yet she prayed loudly and fervently, crying out to God, not holding anything back from her Creator. I once sat by her door as she prayed, cried, and pleaded with God to be with those she loved, the persecuted, and those who were struggling.
When she was suffering from cancer and nearing death, she refused to take pain pills so that her mind would be clear. With a clear mind, she could speak to close friends and family members, encouraging each one in the Lord. Until her very last breath, Sabina praised God and ministered to those He had put in her presence. She exemplified the words, "Well done good and faithful servant."
One of the lessons of The Pilgrim's Progress at Salvation Hill is that we no longer walk alone. Obviously, God is with us, but He has also given us great men and woman of faith to encourage us. They could be family members, friends, neighbors, a pastor, or a church leader.
Those who have gone before us also cheer us on. The writer of Hebrews tells us,
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." (Hebrews 12:1, ESV)
I imagine Sabina Wurmbrand among the cloud of witnesses cheering me on.
America, and the world, are facing trying times. Perhaps you too have had a season of difficulty, as I have. We want peace and security. While these are good things, we have to remember that we live in a fallen and sinful world. The promise was not that there would be no storms, but that we would not be alone as we traveled through them.
The promise was not that there would be no storms, but that we would not be alone as we traveled through them.
God is with us, and He uses those in our lives to walk with us as well. As Sabina would often remind me: "The finish line is not on this Earth."
When we become discouraged, we can reach out to those God has placed in our lives to encourage us. And we can read about great heroes of the faith that finished their race and now cheer us on.
A few months ago, with the permission of Christian History Institute, we placed the entire Torchlighters series online for free for friends of RevelationMedia. Sure, the sale of DVDs has gone down, but in a pandemic, families need to be able to draw on the strength of spiritual heroes that have faced great adversity and stood strong in their faith. Heroes of the faith can strengthen generations, just as Sabina Wurmbrand has done for me and for others.
If you want to be encouraged by heroes of the faith, watch a few Torchlighter episodes. If you want your children or grandchildren to have real heroes, please share the series with them. Perhaps these men and women are also now part of the great cloud of witnesses cheering us on.
Thank you for your prayers and support. Together we are impacting the world with The Pilgrim's Progress and the Torchlighters series, and together we will bring a visual and interactive Bible, iBIBLE, free to the world.
Have a blessed Sunday and remember: you do not walk alone! Steve Cleary CEO/Founder RevelationMedia
