Q&A with Kristy
1. What is verse mapping?
Mapping Bible verses isn't new; it's been a topic of conversation and practice for years. You'll find endless examples of simple ways to accomplish this with a quick online search. And Bible journaling images and inductive study methods are popping up all over social media. But what is verse mapping, and can a few steps really help us understand God's Word more clearly— enough to truly make us new creations?
In simplest terms, verse mapping is getting real about studying the Bible. It's not just reading it, it's researching everything you can in a verse to learn more about who God is and how he wants to speak to you through his Word.
2. What are the steps?
The Verse Mapping steps are simple, and includes:
👉 Hebrew/Greek word studies
👉 Finding connections in Scripture
👉 Comparing Bible translations
👉 And learning as much as you can from your time with the Holy Spirit.
This is a Holy Spirit-led study; we can't take a step without him leading the way. So first . . . pray. Talk to God. Listen to worship music and praise him for as long as you need to. Do whatever works to invite him into your study space. This should be time that you spend together, with him revealing more of who he is to your heart. This time is meant to be personal and wholly unique to your faith journey with him.
3. What qualifies me to do this kind of study?
If you're not a seminary-trained theologian by education, don't worry— verse mapping is for anyone with a heart to know the Word of God more. What matters is not how much knowledge you have before you begin but where the experience takes you.
4. What are the rules?
There's no right or wrong way to pursue verse mapping from a structural standpoint, but here is an example: While these elements comprise one way to pursue verse mapping, what matters isn't what your map looks like—that's up to you. What does matter is what you discover in each verse. Here's a good rule of thumb: everything is fair game in studying and verse mapping as long as God said it first. Once you've gathered the tools and gained the confidence to apply what you've learned, it's up to you how your journey will look . . . how in-depth you study . . . and how much time you spend with God each day.
5. What tools do you need to get started?
I'd dare you to check your home office or handbag, and find that you don't already have everything you need to get started! It's that easy.
To make it easy, I suggest starting with the Verse Mapping Acts study. You'll also need a Bible in your favorite translation (your smart device will work for that), pens or markers, and… if you want to get really dangerous, a concordance. The last part is time in your schedule. (This is on the honor system between you and God. Whether it's five minutes today or an hour tomorrow, dedicate what you can, where you can. Just make it honest time spent with Him.)
6. Is this study for small groups, individuals, or both?
Verse Mapping Acts is perfect for individual, personal study (like the FaithGateway OBS) or small groups. Women's ministry leaders in churches across the country are discovering the impact verse mapping can have on the spiritual growth of the women in their churches. But you can also find a coffee shop corner, a front porch rocker, or any book nook in between, and go for it on your own!
