Case Updates |
Dear webmaster220, In Loudoun County, Virginia, the school system is pushing a radical agenda—one funded by outside groups—on young children. Schools are indoctrinating students with harmful ideologies. They're forcing them to lie to each other. And they're insisting that students judge each other by their identity—not the content of their character. The county school board won't listen to teachers and parents. Instead, it's pushing its own political and cultural agenda on a captive audience of students—and using them as pawns in the process. Alliance Defending Freedom—with your support—is pushing back against this agenda and working to protect the rights of teachers and parents and promote the dignity of all students. The school district suspended a physical education teacher who spoke up—during public comment time of a school board meeting—against a proposed gender identity policy. The school district labeled the teacher's actions "disruptive" to justify the suspension. But there was no disruption. The P.E. teacher taught class the day after the school board meeting with no issue. Through the support of people like you, Alliance Defending Freedom filed a lawsuit against Loudoun County Public Schools on the teacher's behalf. Here's what has happened so far: - A lower court said that the school district was wrong to suspend the teacher and reinstated him.
- Loudoun County, which was unwilling to back down, appealed to the Virginia Supreme Court.
- In a ruling last week, the Virginia Supreme Court affirmed the lower court's ruling. The court said that the school district likely violated the teacher's constitutional rights to free speech and religious freedom.
- Also, last week the court allowed two more teachers (both represented by ADF) to join the lawsuit.
Still, sadly, the school district has enacted the policy. The policy (policy 8040) requires all teachers and students to deny the truth about being male and female. The policy allows students to change their names and pronouns at school—without parental involvement. In addition, the policy compels students, teachers, and staff to call students by their chosen pronouns or face punishment. And the school district is clearly not afraid to dole out the punishment. This is blatantly unconstitutional. The government cannot FORCE Americans to support ideologies with which they disagree. This policy harms the very students it claims to protect. And teachers cannot be forced to promote untrue things, especially when those things harm students. The fact that the policy was adopted is just one more reason why we need your support today. We're not only representing a teacher against an unfair suspension. We're challenging the policy itself in court. Now more teachers are taking a stand Monica Gill is a history teacher at Loudoun County High School. Kim Wright is an English teacher at Smart's Mill Middle School. Monica and Kim aren't willing to violate their consciences by saying untrue and harmful things to their students. And what the policy forces them to suggest through their words—that gender and sex are fluid and can be changed—does just that. That's why they have joined the lawsuit against the Loudoun County School Board's policy. "This school board is continually pursuing policies that are ideological," Monica says. "They're not educational." "This policy violates my faith, my obligation to teach evidence-based truth, and my commitment to love the kids entrusted to my care," Kim adds. What's at stake goes beyond the classroom. If Kim and Monica are forced to lie to students, it will directly harm these kids for the rest of their lives. Children who struggle with gender dysphoria should be given the best care we can provide. They shouldn't be caught up in policies that don't reflect reality. Loudoun County isn't the only place where this debate is taking place. It's happening within schools all across the country—maybe even yours. It's critical to give a strong defense of free speech and religious freedom right now. Teachers don't sacrifice their rights when they step through the doors of the school. Will you give today to help defend Kim, Monica, and all the teachers affected by this radical policy? Ultimately, this case is about kids. It's about treating them with respect and dignity—and telling them the truth. It's about their futures. When you give the best gift you can today, you'll help challenge the policy that contradicts the kids' best interests. Our nation's kids shouldn't be used as experiments. They're not pawns in a political or ideological game. We're betting that you agree—and that you're concerned about what's happening to kids in school systems like Loudoun County. Teachers are standing for freedom. They shouldn't have to stand alone. Please give today. | | | | |
