God Separates the Land and the Seas Creation Day 3, Part 1 | | And then God said: GOD: Let the waters below be gathered together and let dry ground appear. And it happened just as God had commanded. Then God called the dry ground: "Land," and the waters which He had gathered together He called: "Seas." –iBIBLE Chapter 1 | | Scripture reference: Genesis 1:9–10 On the third day, God separated dry ground from the seas. Sandy beaches, desert expanses, hills, valleys, and mountains—all of the earth's land emerged from the depths of the water. This land would be the material from which not only plants would grow, but the crowning jewel of God's creation, mankind, would be formed. In the ancient Near East, the sea was considered unpredictable and terrifying. Today, even with the aid of modern technology, the oceans can still be frightening, treacherous, and deadly. Because of this, many ancient Near East non-Israelite peoples believed that a god of chaos established the seas. In contrast, Scripture presents the truth that even the seas which were perceived as tumultuous and chaotic (for good reason!) were conceived of, ordered, and limited by the power of the one true God. | | Scripture presents the truth that even the seas which were perceived as tumultuous and chaotic (for good reason!) were conceived of, ordered, and limited by the power of the one true God. | | [God said] "Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed'?" —Job 38:8–11 [ESV] Think of all of the shipwrecks Paul suffered (2 Cor. 11:25, Acts 27), and the harrowing storm Jonah endured (Jonah 1:4–13). Scripture does not gloss over the fact that the seas are powerful to deliver and powerful to destroy. Consider today the overwhelming power of our Lord who rules over the seas! | | Consider today the overwhelming power of our Lord who rules over the seas! | | Our Response God's limits are righteous. This is something we see reiterated in God's speech from Job chapters 38 and following (part of which is quoted above). God is the One who understands, the One with perfect knowledge and power, and He knows what is best for His creation. We can trust Him and the limits He sets. This week, think about the limits that God has established for your protection and care. If the seas were not limited, who knows what danger would befall us? God loves you so much that He has ordered creation so that you, and all other humans and creatures, can live and thrive. | | A Prayer for This Week Most Merciful Father, we come before You today acknowledging Your power and might.
