Lights in the Heavens Creation Day 4   And God spoke again: GOD: Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate day from night. GOD: And let them be for signs, seasons, days, and years. So, God made two great lights: the Sun to rule the day and the Moon to rule the night. And He placed all the stars in the heavens. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning of the fourth day. –iBIBLE Chapter 1 Scripture reference: Genesis 1:14–19   Just as God created the heavens with the power of his Word, so He filled the heavens with the stars, the sun, and the moon. All of creation displays God's creativity and order. The lights in the sky measure and mark seasons, days, and years. And with regularity, God's creation continues and abides by those cycles.   The order of days is apparent in our everyday lives. We rise in the morning to the sun's glow, and we go to bed at night by the light of the moon. But what does it mean that these lights in the sky were for signs?   Among other things, the shimmering stars in the night sky were used by God throughout Scripture to illustrate His promises. God's Word is perfectly connected. His one Divine narrative reveals these signs over thousands of years, so we can see promises given by God and their fulfillment recorded in the Bible. God gave Abram the promise that he would have innumerable descendants, and through his Seed all nations would be blessed. When Abram doubted, God led him outside and pointed to the heavens, saying: "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." —Genesis 15:5 [ESV] Over a thousand years later, a bright star in the east would lead the wisemen to the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ, the promised Seed from Abram. The wisemen said, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." —Matthew 2:2   The star then rose before them and came to rest over the place where Jesus was, and they worshipped Him.   Likewise, Jesus's second coming will be attended by signs in the heavens. Jesus explains, "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven." —Mark 13:24–27   God determines the number of the stars (Psalm 147), and He uses them throughout His Word to help teach His people. Creation itself declares the glory of God! Our Response God keeps His promises. He kept His promise to Abram, illustrating it with the stars. When Jesus came into the world, the heavens proclaimed His arrival. When we rise to the sun's light, we can look forward to a new day knowing that our Lord keeps His promises to all His people. A Prayer for This Week Most merciful Father, You have shown us through Your Word that Your purposes for the universe are perfect. You brought the lights in the heavens into being, and ordered days, seasons, months, and years by their light. Help us to remember that your Word given in the Scriptures shows us both promise and fulfillment through signs in the heavens, and help us to trust You, even in adversity. We love You and honor You; we look forward to Your second coming. In Jesus's name we pray, Amen.
