As Jesus teaches, He mentions patches on cloth and wineskins. Nowadays, we very rarely use either. Clothes are thrown out when they get old and liquids have more modern containers. So, we must lean in toward our Savior to hear His instruction. Some followers learn to take their questions to Christ. They figure He intended each word to assist them with their faith. Every bit of instruction is a chance to draw closer to our Teacher and learn straight from Him.
When Jesus came to us, the church followed the instructions of Moses and the prophets to guide them. They had their own ways of worshiping and approaching God. But they faced the tendency to turn everything into empty words and rituals. Today, we have our traditions, teachings, and doctrines. We also run the risk of patching and meddling with our faith. But now we have our Savior. So where could Christ be leading us?
Jesus always draws our attention back to Himself and the Father. Like patchwork all woven together, we can tie and connect ourselves to the Lord. Like wine filling new skins, His Spirit can fill us. Christ forever encourages us to look away from ourselves, and our world. He directs us toward heaven. Even though He uses common analogies, they should help us fix our gaze on the One who is above. Let´s press closer and weave ourselves so fully into the Holy Spirit that all will be preserved.
Dear Jesus, let us lean closer to You to learn more each day. For our faith to grow, walk us through our every instruction. Fortify our bond as we feed from every word from Your mouth. Strengthen this walk we invest in as we return for more of You. Become the patchwork that we weave into. Make us so blended into You that we become one—you in us and us in You. Amen
