In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. When the world was filled with living creatures, fish in the sea, birds in the sky, and wildlife on the land, God formed man out of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and he became a living soul. God gave him dominion over all living things in the land, in the sky, and in the sea. God planted a garden in the east called Eden, and there He placed Adam to tend the garden. In the middle of the garden were two trees. God spoke to Adam and said he was not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for if he did, he would surely die. God made Eve, a helper suitable for Adam, and when He was finished creating everything, God saw all that He created, and it was very good. | | | Chapter 2: The Fall
The serpent, who was craftier than any of the creatures that the Lord God had made, came to Eve and asked her, "Did God really say not to eat of any tree in the garden?" Tempted by the serpent's words, Eve turned her gaze to the forbidden tree. Eve went against God's command and ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and shared it with her husband who was with her. God passed judgment on Adam and Eve and cursed the serpent. The Lord God drove the man from the garden of Eden, along with his wife, and placed His cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the tree of life. | | Chapter 3: Cain and Abel
After being driven out from the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had two sons: Cain and Abel. When they grew into manhood, in the course of time, Cain and Abel brought offerings for the Lord. Cain brought produce from the ground, and Abel brought the firstborn from among his sheep. The Lord accepted Abel and his offering, but he did not accept Cain or his offering. Realizing this, Cain became very angry. After hearing the warning of God, Cain went to speak to his brother Abel, and when they were in the field together, Cain turned on his brother Abel and killed him. God passed judgment on Cain for what he had done, but when Cain cried out for mercy, God marked Cain as a sign of protection. | | Chapter 4: The Great Flood (Part 1)
God saw that the people on earth were very wicked. The intentions of their hearts were only evil, and God regretted that He had made mankind. Among all the wicked people of the earth, there was a man who found favor with the Lord God. His name was Noah, and he walked with God. God spoke to Noah, "The earth is filled with violence. Because of this, I will destroy that which I have created." God gave instructions to Noah to build an ark that would save him and his family, and the animals from the flood. They only would be saved. Noah did just as God had commanded him: he gathered all of the animals, his family, and enough food for all of them, and entered the ark. After seven days, the fountains of the earth burst, and the windows of heaven opened, and it rained on the earth 40 days and 40 nights. | | Chapter 5: The Great Flood (Part 2)
God made a wind to blow over the earth, and the waters began to recede. The ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. After a year on the ark, God spoke to Noah, saying "Come out from the ark." God commanded Noah and his family, and all the animals to replenish the earth. God promised that He would never again destroy all living things has He had done. Then God blessed Noah and his sons, and gave them every living thing that moves as food for them. God established His covenant with every living creature of the earth, that never again would all living beings be destroyed by a flood. God set his bow in the clouds as a sign of the covenant between Him and the earth, saying that He will remember His covenant. | | | Chapter 6: The Tower of Babel
After the Great Flood, the sons of Noah and their wives began to repopulate the earth. Among their descendants was a mighty man, a leader among men, and a fierce hunter before the Lord named Nimrod. The beginnings of his kingdom included Babel in the land of Shinar. At that time, the people of the earth spoke one language. The people settled in the land of Shinar, desiring to make a name for themselves. "We shall settle here. We shall not be scattered over the face of the earth." As the people continued to build, the Lord came down to see their city and their tower. God said, "Come, let Us go down and confuse their language, so they might not understand one another's speech."
