The Salvation Army is a well-known presence throughout the world. Its primary purpose is to help those in need in the name of Jesus. But providing for the poor is not the only mission for the soldiers of the Salvation Army. They also house orphans, heal the sick, teach classes, and much more. In short, the global impact of the Salvation Army is epic. Yet this incredible ministry started with the action of just one man – a young British evangelist named William Booth. Booth, born in 1829, saw a war waging in London. It wasn't a battle for land or resources. It was a battle for the very souls of mankind. It was a spiritual war, and the front lines were taking devastating hits in the east end of London. Booth witnessed lives being destroyed by the satanic promise that troubles can be lost in a bottle. As a redeemed child of God, William knew that the answer to poverty, depression, and emptiness could not be found in a pub. He watched Satan move person after person into the line of fire, snuffing out their hope. It was a war that no one else was willing to engage in, but William Booth and his wife Catherine stepped boldly into the place of the broken and hurting. |

"I am not waiting for a move of God," William resolved... "I am a move of God!" |

And with a boldness that came only from the Holy Spirit, William Booth entered the battle. His words of hope and redemption in Christ led one weary soul after another to faith and life in Jesus Christ. Lives were changed and families were restored. But Satan wasn't going to give up so much ground without a fight. The pub owners were enraged that their business was dwindling. They determined to meet the source of their loss with force. But William, Catherine, and the new believers realized that such attacks were not simply physical – they were spiritual. "The waters are rising, but so am I. I am not going under, but over," said Catherine Booth with the confidence of her Lord strengthening her heart. Indeed, the trouble that the Booths and the new Christians of East London were facing was a spiritual battle. They began to think of themselves as soldiers in this battle – soldiers of the Lord. And it wasn't long before William chose a name for their little band of believers – the Salvation Army. Fortunately for this Salvation Army, they found that the Holy Bible gave them precise orders for wars of this kind. "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand" (Ephesians 6:12-13 ESV). Because of the stand that those 1800s Christians made in the trenches of East London, the Salvation Army continues to win souls for Jesus and restore hope to the hopeless.
