Introduction
“The history of the world,” wrote Thomas Carlyle, “is but the biography of great men.”
We all owe much to pioneers—not only those who opened up the New World, but also the veterans of the faith throughout the centuries. Theirs is a story just as exciting, and those who dismiss history as boring have obviously never tried to come at it through biography.
We are the inheritors of a tremendous legacy that has been ill-acknowledged. By this neglect we deprive ourselves of a rich benefit. Here are thrilling accounts of courage, adventure, and endurance—tales of those early believers who stood up for their faith against kings who had no allegiance to the One Great King and believers who battled also against heretics seeking to undermine the true faith. Many of those heretics and rulers also find mention in this volume because they too loomed large on the stage of church history. So also did other figures who made contributions through music, philosophy, literature, painting, and other arts.
It is impossible to cover two thousand years of Christian biography adequately in one volume or to offer complete background information on each entry. Inevitably we are vulnerable to criticism about who some individual has been omitted when some lesser luminary finds place. We are mindful that one of Cicero’s laws for a historian stipulates that “there should be no suspicion of partiality in his writing or of malice.” We hope that the wide range of material presented here and the matter in which we have handled it will acquit us on both counts. The selection we have made is intended primarily to represent those men and women who made a lasting impact on Christian faith and experience. They followeed “Jesus, the author and finisher of faith”—and yet “they, without us, are not complete.”May their inspiring stories encourage us and our generation to run the race as they have run.

Philip W. Comfort
