What Every Christian Should Know About God
Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made.
–Romans 1:20
What are your ideas of God based on? Do your beliefs about God come from your own speculations about what He should be like or perhaps from representations of Him in pop culture? Or are your beliefs about God grounded in reality? This week, we're going to examine the second pillar of historic Christianity: God the Father.
The first chapter of the Bible recounts how God created the universe. The remaining 1,188 chapters record how God revealed Himself to His creation. God was under no obligation to have any relationship with His creation. Yet the great God of the universe cares enough about you that He wants to have a relationship with you!
How does God reveal Himself to you and me? First of all, God reveals Himself through nature. We call this natural revelation. Nature reveals some important truths about God. For example, in Luke 12:27–28, Jesus said, "Consider the lilies, how they grow. . . . If God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you?" You don't have to read a Bible or attend a church service to understand that there is Somebody greater than you in the universe and that He is involved in His creation.
Second, God reveals Himself through Jesus Christ. Hebrews 1:1–2 says, "God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son." Everything you need to know about God is found in Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9).
Third, God reveals Himself through His Word. Jesus is the living Word of God (John 1:1), and the Bible is the written Word of God. If you truly love Jesus, you will love and revere the Bible as well.
Fourth, God reveals Himself through His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit reveals God to us personally. For example, the Spirit guides us when we need direction and affirms when we are acting in a way that is pleasing to God (Romans 8:14–16). The Bible says every true child of God is led by the Holy Spirit.
God has gone to great lengths to reveal Himself to us so we can have a relationship with Him.
