BROTHERS, JESUS Jesus grew up in a normal family with parents and brothers. Jesus' Nazareth critics listed them in Mark 6:3 as James, Joses, Juda, and Simon. Their names appear again in the parallel passage of Matthew 13:55, except Joseph is used as the alternate spelling of Joses (see NAS). His brothers may have been among the friends in Mark 3:21 who thought Jesus was "beside himself"; ten verses later 3:31 "his brethren and his mother" tried to get His attention while He was teaching in a house. Furthermore, John 7:5 reports that "neither did his brethren believe in him." After the resurrection, however, they changed their minds and joined the disciples in times of prayer (Acts 1:14). The risen Christ appeared to one of them, James, and he became the leader of the church in Jerusalem (Acts 12:17; 1 Cor. 15:7). Nevertheless, some writings in the early centuries raised questions about the brothers to protect their developing doctrine of Mary's perpetual virginity. One of them, often called the Gospel of James, tells the life story of Mary, using much fanciful material. It claims that Jesus' brothers were the sons of Joseph by an earlier marriage. This is the view of the Greek Orthodox Church. Later a famous scholar, Jerome, argued that Jesus' brothers were really his cousins because their mother was Mary of Cleophas and the sister of Mary the mother of Jesus (see John 19:25). This is the view of the Roman Catholic Church, but Protestant scholars prefer the traditional view of the Gospels. Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. Mary and Joseph then had four sons in the way all humans normally do.

DAY 20

"and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us." - Titus 2:8

I barely knew her on our first trip. Quiet, beautiful, and sweet, she seemed shy and standoffish. But it was something more than her natural beauty that drew all the boys to her.

On the bus ride home, I noticed two boys, in particular, sitting very close to her—too close. I heard rumors. I knew they weren't true. She must have heard them too. For six months, I did not see her. Soon, she started coming around more. She became more expressive and engaged in our youth ministry, signing up for the same trip the following year. After only two days into our trip, several more boys confessed to having a crush on her.

I teased her… bad move!

She didn't appreciate it. On the long way home, she must have had time to think.

"Jim, can we talk?"

"Sure," I said.

"Am I sending the wrong message to boys?"

Her question launched a half-hour discussion about how boys perceived her non-verbal cues. Her non-verbal affirmation, along with her "whatever" attitude and natural beauty, drove boys crazy. As her spiritual father (so to speak), I was allowed to explain this to her and help her live above reproach.

For the first time in her life, this godly teenager was able to interpret her beauty and non-verbal body language through the eyes of a teenage, hormonally driven boy. Her eyes were opened to the fact that to many people (especially teenage boys), perception is reality.

Perception IS reality. How many reputations have been ruined or severely damaged by a misconception or wrong perception?

Let me tell you a truth we often want to overlook: what people think about you does matter! Immaturity says, "I don't care!" But there is wisdom in caring about how the people around you perceive you. It matters to you (admit it, it does). It matters to God. It matters to the church that you represent and how others see you. Live and speak in such a way that nobody will ever have anything on or against you.

Live above reproach!

If you are wondering where the pages that contained the words "excerpt", "Introducing" or other words indicating I was quoting a book have all gone, I migrated all of them over to Posts and Posted them all on August 18 and August 19 2024. I did that so you could use the search widget that is built in to the blog on the upper right hand corner. You will be happy to know that there are more of them than just the batch that were migrated, there were also lots of posts that contained the same words that did not have to be migrated over, they were there all along. I am really enjoying doing introductions and excerpts because it really makes for powerful and fascinating reading when I do them. You get the feeling you are in a bookstore holding a book in your hand looking at the table of contents and deciding whether or not to buy the book.

Despite his status as one of the most influential and intelligent Christian authors of the 20th century, C.S. Lewis never thought of himself as a professional theologian. While he was well-read in many types of literary genres, he did not go to Seminary to obtain a Masters in Theology and study a year of Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek. He was not a Pastor who preached sermons to a congregation for many years but a raw, honest philosopher and professor of literature who wrote as well as any Christian of his time could. He had a gift for clearly articulating his perspectives on a variety of issues. Above all, he was humble, in that he had an honest evaluation of both his strengths and his weaknesses. I believe this is one of the main reasons why he is still so enjoyable to read even after all these years. In terms of his theology, Lewis himself said he was an “Anglican but not especially ‘high,’ nor especially ‘low,’ nor especially anything else.” So the theology of C.S. Lewis is not something one can immediately discover by simply perusing a certain book of his to see exactly where he stands on certain doctrinal issues; it is much more subtle and convoluted than that. But in this book, you will find his different thoughts from his many books about certain Christian doctrines and topics pieced together in an easy-to-follow format (Lewis has written nearly 60 books but none of them are on systematic theology). This book offers very clear depictions of his theology concerning subjects such as the doctrine of inspiration, original sin, human depravity, human origins, evolution, intelligent design, theodicy, love and marriage, redemption, grace, new creation, and grief, as his authentic reaction to God after his wife’s death is conveyed. The final chapters also contain all of his greatest quotes arranged and sorted by topic as well as excerpts, quotes, and summaries from most of his books in a quick, easy-to-read, bullet-point format. These last two sections are a particularly great resource to draw from as you can quickly learn about the main points Lewis conveys in his bestselling books.

Sometimes you get to start the search over on the host website to get all the results. I was unable to execute a search on the host website until I logged in, then I ran the search on "mine" and got around 500 verses in the Darby version
