Bible Passage
Read 4:7–11, noting the key words and definitions to the right of the passage.
7 But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.
8 And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins."
9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.
10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11 If anyone speaks, let him spea] as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
the end of all things (v. 7)—not a chronological termination, but a consummation or achieving of God's goal
is at hand (v. 7)—is imminent; that is, could be at any moment
be serious and watchful (v. 7)—a command to not be carried away by passions or emotions but, rather, to have an eternal perspective in this life
fervent love (v. 8)—love that is literally stretched or strained, meaning love that seeks the good of others first and without concern for the cost
"love will cover a multitude of sins" (v. 8)—a quote from Proverbs 10:12 that underscores the need for Christians to practice forgiveness and overlook insults and unkindnesses
Be hospitable (v. 9)—The Greek word means love of strangers and meant, practically, to open one's home to travelers and strangers.
received a gift (v. 10)—A spiritual gift is a God-given ability granted to every believer by which the Holy Spirit ministers to and builds up the body of Christ; every believer has something to contribute.
minister it to one another (v. 10)—Gifts are to be used to benefit and serve others, not to enhance one's own position or prestige.
good stewards (v. 10)—A steward manages the resources of another, meaning that our gifts do not belong to us; rather, they are on loan from God.
speaks … ministers (v. 11)—This implies that there are two categories of gifts: speaking gifts and serving gifts.
oracles of God (v. 11)—the very words out of God's mouth
God may be glorified (v. 11)—the goal of everything
3) Why does Peter charge his readers to be serious and watchful in prayer? Should we be less urgent or not? Why?
(verses to consider: Romans 13:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; James 5:7–8; Revelation 22:20)
4) What kind of love does Peter command believers to demonstrate? What is the difference between "covering over" sin and overlooking or excusing sin?
(verses to consider: Proverbs 10:12; Matthew 18:15–17; 1 Corinthians 5)
5) What does biblical hospitality look like?
(verses to consider: Genesis 18:1–8; Deuteronomy 14:28–29; 1 Timothy 3:2)
