AAPLOG Chair Dr. Christina Francis Published in Newsweek
On June 28th, AAPLOG Chairman of the Board Dr. Christina Francis published an op ed in Newsweek, reviewing the impact of abortion on the health of women and children inherent in the proposed Women's Health Protection Act of 2021. Bill text here
Dr. Francis states:
"The problem with the Women's Health Protection Act, however, is that women's health is the last thing it has in mind.
What my patients are referring to are the complications that arise in later pregnancies as a result of abortions. The majority of abortions that take place in the U.S. are surgical, with medication abortions increasing in frequency—and it's an injustice that many women undergo these procedures without knowing the long-term costs to their own health and the health of their future children."
We encourage you to leave comments on the op-ed - you can comment in the "Conversation" section below the piece.

Get to Know Your AAPLOG Board - Betsy Morton, Midwifery Subsection Leader
Where are you from, when did you begin practicing medicine, and what area of medicine do you practice?
I first became aware of abortion when I was 12 years old. At that time, I decided to become a Nurse Midwife. I graduated from Covenant College and then from Thomas Jefferson University with my BSN. I later graduated with my MSN in Nurse Midwifery from University of Pennsylvania. I worked as a CNM and then later returned to nursing to raise my children, When my oldest started college I became the nurse manager at a pregnancy resource center and met Dr. Donna Harrison who was exhibiting for AAPLOG at an ACNM (American College of Nurse Midwifery) meeting. I agreed to become involved with AAPLOG as Midwifery subsection leader. I am currently the Nurse Supervisor for a new Nurse Family Partnership program supporting at risk first-time moms.
What is the best part of being an AAPLOG member? What subsection/Committee/project are you leading at AAPLOG?
Finding a community of likeminded medical professionals has been life-changing for me. Attending MBEC was an amazing experience. Networking with other pro-life providers and learning about the research and the practice of Hippocratic medicine filled me with such joy! When I first became a midwife, the college was largely pro-life with a few abortion minded voices around. Now pro-life CNMs are being bullied and told that there is no place for them. Many in the ACNM are actively hostile to pro-life midwives and students. Many pro-life CNMs feel alone and don't know where to find support for either getting into school or finding work after graduation.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing your subsection, or pro-life medical professionals in general? How does AAPLOG help you and its other members overcome those challenges?
I think the biggest challenge is the need for support for those CNMs afraid to even mention their views for fear of losing their jobs. Students also face significant challenges navigating and gaining entrance to programs in the current climate. AAPLOG membership provides a network of support vital to CNMs standing together. In the subsection, we can help students navigate entrance into programs more open to diverse opinions. Finding work with pro-life practices is also a way AAPLOG can support CNM students and graduates. My goal as subsection leader is to reach out to the midwifery community and to encourage pro-life CNMs to become members and to find the vital lifeline of support this community offers.
AAPLOG to File Amicus Brief in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court Case
AAPLOG will be filing an amicus brief on behalf of our patients in the upcoming Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court case. This upcoming case before the Supreme Court is important because it causes the court to take another look at the crumbling viability standard set by Roe in the 1970s, when fetal survival was minimal before 28 weeks, and very little was known about intrauterine life. Survival outside the womb with appropriate resuscitative measures is now possible at 22 weeks gestation. And studies demonstrate that a fetus can feel pain as early as 12 weeks gestation if not earlier. It's time for the court to catch up with the science.
Women's Professional Brief Planned- please consider signing on
In addition, there is another brief being planned for the Dobbs case- this brief would be exclusively from women professionals. We encourage any women physicians, professional women, women's scholars, and women's organizations to consider signing on to this planned amicus brief entitled: "Women Don't Need to Rely on Abortion for Social Equality", to be written by several women law professors. If you (or a woman you know) are interested in possibly signing on, please email your full name, degree, and affiliation (solely for identification purposes) to Professor Helen Alvaré at halvare@gmu.edu. The deadline for communications to Prof. Alvare is July 22nd.
Abortion Pill Reversal Protocol changes
A year ago, most of the women who called the APR hotline were under 10 weeks gestation. But the expansion of chemical abortion through all 40 weeks of pregnancy - sometimes used along with digoxin, laminaria, and surgical procedures - has prompted updates to the APR protocol and patient education.
The FDA Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) restrictions were removed from mifepristone in April 2021 which opened the flood-gates for telemedicine abortion to be allowed in more States and smoothed the path towards mail-order abortions even without any medical input.
Previously, all U.S. women were supposed to have been provided an ultrasound prior to starting a chemical abortion. These scans prior to abortion were intended to confirm dating of the pregnancy and fetal placement. Physician visits are also intended to determine if a woman has an ectopic pregnancy-which can be deadly if diagnosis is delayed by symptoms of rupture being mistaken as pain in a mifepristone abortion. Further no one is checking Rh status in these women. In addition, there are more than 72 different websites - some pharmacy and some abortion - that offer chemical abortion with few questions and no guarantee of who they are selling to. Chemical abortion can easily be purchased by human traffickers, pimps, friends, relatives, anyone with a credit card.
Drs. Brent Boles and George Delgado have recently updated the APR protocol for reversal of a chemical abortion due to changes in how chemical abortion is being prescribed and distributed to women. A link to the updated protocol can be found here.
