View this email in your browser Dear Friends, In a recent interview with Moody radio, I was asked about the importance of leaving a legacy. Although I only had a minute or two to answer, thoughts flooded through my mind, and I remembered my time traveling with Pastor Richard Wurmbrand (author of Tortured for Christ and founder of The Voice of the Martyrs). I was young, in my late 20s, and I suffered from a speech impediment I had grown up with. I was a "behind-the-scenes" guy—making arrangements, driving from event to event, and making sure everything was taken care of. It was a special time in my life as I was able to spend so much quality time with Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand. I never spoke in churches, never did an interview, and even had challenges simply answering the phone. While my stuttering wasn't quite as bad as when I was a kid in school, it still affected me on a daily basis. One day, Richard told me I should write a book or make a movie. I just chuckled. "Pastor," I answered, "that's not my calling. I can't write a book." I thought to myself that I was just an insecure kid that couldn't speak right. I was happy being the "behind-the-scenes" guy. Pastor Wurmbrand did what he normally did when looking to make a point. He ignored my reply and continued, "Books and movies will live longer and travel farther than you ever will." At the time, I never believed God would call me to write or produce, but I was taken aback by his words. Richard was right. Christian media can travel around the world and go places we never will. Richard's book Tortured for Christ was read by millions of people, in dozens of languages, and continues to impact people today even though he passed to eternity nearly 20 years ago. "We often hear the term 'leaving a legacy.' I prefer to think of our lives as 'building a legacy' with our actions each and every day." When I made the movie The Pilgrim's Progress, I often thought of John Bunyan sitting in a prison cell 300+ years prior, writing his famous allegory. Did he realize how far his writing would go and how many people it would impact? Did he realize the spiritual legacy he was building? I didn't realize it at the time, but Pastor Wurmbrand was speaking into my life. Perhaps he knew God had a plan for my life that I wouldn't have believed or even accepted. I am saddened that he didn't live to see the movies our team has made, or the iBIBLE we are currently producing. However, my heart is filled with joy knowing he would be proud. He wouldn't say much, as he didn't pass a lot of compliments, but he would have simply thrust his arm into the air and proclaimed, "Bravo!" God has taught me the importance of the spiritual legacy we can build in our children and grandchildren. We build a legacy as we demonstrate Christ's love to those we come in contact with. We build a spiritual legacy when we support a mission worker or help spread God's Word. Richard imparted a legacy in me when he spent time teaching me spiritual matters. We often hear the term "leaving a legacy." I prefer to think of our lives as "building a legacy" with our actions each and every day. It may seem uncomfortable to think about events outliving us, but that is the glory of the child of God. The things of this world will waste away, but what we do for God will last into eternity.
