Dear Richard,
As the situation related to COVID-19 (coronavirus) continues to evolve, I wanted to share an update about Mayo Clinic's ongoing response and connect you to our most up-to-date and trusted information and resources.
Updates from Mayo Clinic include:
- Mayo Clinic's president shares the organization's latest efforts to address COVID-19. Mayo Clinic President and CEO Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., appeared on CNBC to describe Mayo's latest efforts to treat patients with COVID-19 and to provide a new antibody test to find out who has had COVID-19. In the future, a test like this could determine who has developed an immune response. While testing at Mayo Clinic will first roll out to internal patients and health care workers, Mayo is leading these efforts in the interest of patients everywhere. You can listen to Dr. Farrugia's interview online at CNBC. Additional news coverage of the antibody test is available from Fox News, as well as Discovery's Edge, Mayo Clinic's research magazine.
- Mayo Clinic is the lead institution coordinating access to an experimental plasma treatment. Last week, Mayo Clinic announced it will serve as the lead institution providing coordinated access to investigational convalescent plasma. News on Mayo Clinic's role in the national collaborative effort has been shared by The Washington Post and The New York Times (via Reuters). Answers to many common questions on the program are available at uscovidplasma.org.
- Mayo Clinic expert explains gastrointestinal symptoms of COVID-19. Digestive symptoms can occur in patients with COVID-19, in addition to the more common respiratory symptoms. Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Sahil Khanna, M.B.B.S., answers several questions on the digestive symptoms in a Mayo Clinic News Network article and video.
For the latest updates from Mayo Clinic, I encourage you to visit Mayo Clinic News Network's home for COVID-19 coverage, where you will find articles updated in real time as circumstances and guidance from public health agencies change. In the latest Q&A podcast, Mayo Clinic infectious disease expert Gregory Poland, M.D., addressed the CDC's new guidance for all Americans to wear cloth masks in public.
We are grateful for the outpouring of support and generosity we have received, and, as Mayo Clinic responds to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are looking for ways to support our efforts to overcome this disease. Mayo Clinic has established two funds to direct philanthropic gifts to our response. The COVID-19 Research Fund is accelerating research targeting COVID-19 and related viruses, vaccine development and gene therapies. The COVID-19 Clinical Fund will advance Mayo Clinic's testing capabilities and our overall response to COVID-19 to help patients everywhere get the best care possible. During Mayo Clinic's time of need, many have answered the call to serve and we are asking you to do the same. Our most important work begins today, and it begins with you. You can designate a gift to these funds at philanthropy.mayoclinic.org/COVID19.
Thank you for continuing to look to Mayo Clinic for important news and information as we respond to this pandemic. I will continue to share important updates about Mayo Clinic's leadership in this challenging situation.
Gratefully,
Evanthia Galanis, M.D.
Executive Dean for Development
