Betrayal
This content is drawn from: Matthew 26:47-56
“Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men.” Lamentations 3:32-33
“All good things must come to an end,” the saying goes. After five enriching summers serving on Catalina Island, my time as “Nature Nate” would draw to a close. Not only did my job end, but the traditional summer family camps also ceased—a sad and unfortunate casualty of Satan’s attacks on Christian ministries.
Christian ministry is rife with hurt and distrust. From time to time we read about high-profile cases of corruption in the church, and our hearts grieve. However, we know that pain leads to growth. God used this time in my life to grow me in my Christian walk, showing me that I can minister to others experiencing similar hardships.
Betrayal is nothing new, of course. And there is no one who has known it more deeply and painfully than Jesus Himself. When His close friend handed Him over for a few pieces of silver, when all His disciples deserted Him and fled, Jesus’ pain would echo down through the ages. He knows how we have felt in times of betrayal. Through His greatest agony came our great salvation.
“Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,/ Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide.” (Thomas O. Chisholm, 1923) |
