Always tired, Mallory didn't want to exercise. But the lack of exercise heightened her anxiety, perpetuating a vicious cycle. She felt the Lord prompting her to make healthier choices in what she put into her body, and she woke up most mornings thinking about how 10,000 steps a day would be a good goal. A week and a half later, being diligent to get her steps in and taking extra thought in meal prep, she knew something was changing. Sleep no longer avoided her, but instead embraced her. She felt a stronger sense of peace, and she used her time walking to pray. In our verse today, God reminds us He is our healer. We can rely on His commands to keep us safe. "If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer." The laws God gave to Moses contain remarkable rules pertaining to public health which concerns us even today: water and food contamination, sewage disposal, infectious diseases and health education. Mosaic health laws were ahead of most other civilizations. D. H. Trapnell, M.D., Consultant Radiologist at Westminster Hospital in London, observed:
One respect in which Jewish medicine was better than that of contemporary peoples was the remarkable sanitary code of the Israelites in Moses' time. … The Jews, as a nation, might not have survived their time in the wilderness, or the many other vicissitudes through which they passed, without their sanitary "code."
God's instruction that kept the Hebrews free from sickness and disease is available to you today. He desires to care for you and keep you in all of your ways.
Today's One Thing
Are you taking care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally? When was the last time you had a physical? Take some time and ask the Lord what changes He would have you make in your health.
