Joint Special Operations University (JSOU) Department of Strategic Studies (DSS) announces the annual call for original, peer-reviewed, special operations-related research that contributes to a better understanding of the operational, strategic, policy and conceptual challenges facing Special Operations Forces (SOF). This academic year's focus is on SOF's "Fourth Age" - comprehensive joint-combined ready SOF for a compound security dilemma world. This Fourth Age will emphasize: geostrategy and transnational affairs; strategic intelligence and integrative Joint-Interagency-Intergovernmental-Multinational (JIIM) Operations; science & technology and futures; and SOF leadership and SOF professional ethic.
The suspense for proposal submissions is COB Monday, 31 August 2020. We encourage you to pass along this call for proposals to your cohorts who might be conducting research of interest to the SOF community. Initial notification of selected projects/authors will be completed mid-October.
We encourage you to review the Special Operations Research Topics, Academic Year 2020 (revised for 2021) publication available at: https://jsou.libguides.com/jsoupublications/2020.
Your proposal should address aspects of one (or more) of these topics. As always, proposals addressing priority topics have a better chance of being selected. Please note, the overall historical selection rate is less than 30 percent.
All academic disciplines are encouraged to submit a proposal even if the relation to special operations is not immediately apparent. We are willing to entertain questions in this regard and will help with framing as time permits. Submissions with a clear relevance to special operations will be favored in the evaluation process.
Proposals that involve classified research will be considered, but the researcher must currently have the appropriate security clearance and access to the information required for the intended study. You must contact JSOU to discuss, via secure means, before submitting a proposal for classified research.
Please use the attached template (JSOU FY21 Research Proposal Form) for your proposal submission. At a minimum provide a 200-word abstract as well as describe the proposal's main argument, methodology, how it adds to the existing knowledge of the subject, and research timelines. Directly specify relevance to the special operations enterprise. Additionally, submit a resume/curriculum vitae along with your proposal.
Accepted projects will submit a final manuscript with excellent sourcing and citations that follow the Chicago Manual of Style (Version 17). For JSOU Press Submission Guidelines, please refer to the pdf attachment. For an example product, please see recent JSOU publications at: https://jsou.libguides.com/jsoupublications.
Proposals not selected for a full monograph are encouraged to consider writing a shorter work. This could include a JSOU Occasional Paper or ones that might fit other journals such as the Special Operations Journal, CTX Journal, or PRISM. JSOU Press is also rolling out shorter works (Quick Looks). Questions and comments can be directed to Dr. Christopher Marsh, Director of Research, christopher.marsh.civ@socom.mil, 813-826-3666.
