The Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman (Ombudsman) invites stakeholders to participate in a webinar on the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness law on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. EDT. On December 20, 2019, President Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, which established the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness (LRIF) law. It provides an opportunity for certain Liberian nationals and certain close family members living in the United States, who meet the eligibility requirements, to obtain lawful permanent resident status (Green Cards). Aliens who wish to adjust status under LRIF must properly file an Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status (Form I-485) that is received by USCIS on or before December 20, 2020. Please visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) LRIF webpage for more information. During this session, Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman Michael Dougherty and his staff will provide an overview of the LRIF law, its eligibility requirements, and current adjudications, as well as some filing tips. USCIS' experts will join the Ombudsman's staff to relay information and answer questions where appropriate. The Ombudsman's webinar will be an information sharing and gathering session. Listeners will be able to submit questions and comments (electronically) during the webinar. Where practical, the Ombudsman will share submitted questions (without attribution) to assist USCIS in the development of its training and outreach materials. For more information about our office, view the Ombudsman's Annual Report to Congress, issued in June 2020, or visit the Ombudsman's website. We look forward to hearing from you on these issues and invite the public to register for this important webinar using the link below |
