The True Mirror “But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:25 In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father” (Matthew 7:21). The Lord of all creation cannot be fooled by lip service; He looks straight into the heart. Only those who confess their sin, wholeheartedly repent, and trust in the finished work of Christ for salvation will be saved. In the same way, we are told in James 1:22 to not be merely hearers of the Word, but doers. When there is faith in Jesus, the believer’s life will show it. Have you glanced into a mirror and wished sometimes the reflection looked differently? The Word of God is a true mirror that never lies. It does not flatter the one who takes time to study it. Rather, it accurately reveals the stains of sin. Then it points to a sinner’s only hope of being washed completely clean: the blood of Jesus! Don’t eye God’s Word fleetingly. Instead, peer intently into the mirror of His perfect law, beholding its freedom and living it out with joy.
