April 1, 2021 April marks National Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to highlight the dangers of alcohol misuse. In 2018, the World Health Organization reported that alcohol contributed to more than 200 diseases and injury-related health conditions, ranging from liver diseases, road injuries, and violence, to cancers, cardiovascular diseases, suicides, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers additional facts and statistics about alcohol misuse in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Dietary Guidelines for Alcohol defines drinking in moderation as one drink or less in a day for women and two drinks or less in a day for men.
