But first… AAPLOG Chairman Dr. Christina Francis' Op-Ed Featured in Deseret News AAPLOG Chairman of the Board Dr. Christina Francis was featured in Deseret News for her op-ed, "The government's abortion pill policy puts mothers' lives at risk." Speaking to the dangers of the rollbacks of FDA REMS regarding Mifepristone, Dr. Francis stated, "This change ignores the women who may show up to their local emergency rooms with severe complications potentially caused by the drug — women whose lives are typically saved not by their abortionist, but by an on-call physician at the hospital." The piece also delves into the dangers of dispensing Mifepristone without an in-person consultation, the dangers at-home abortions pose to patients with Rh-negative blood types, and challenges the medical efficacy of arguments from the FDA and ACOG to lift the long-standing REMS. To see the full article from Dr. Francis in Deseret News, please click here. United States Supreme Court to Hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Case This week the Supreme Court of the United States agreed to hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a case dealing with the constitutionality of a 2018 Mississippi state law that banned abortion operations after the first weeks of pregnancy. Lower courts had ruled in preliminary injunctions to precent enforcement of the law on the basis that the law violated women's rights as according to Roe v. Wade, a case long considered the bedrock of abortion access in the United States. The case will be heard during the 2021-2022 Supreme Court term. The Mississippi law under review in the case is known as the Gestational Act, which banned any abortion operation after the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for medical emergencies or severe fetal abnormality. Within a day of passing the legislation, the state was sued by the Jackson Women's Health Clinic, the sole remaining abortion clinic within the state. At least 22 states are currently in the process of passing – or have passed – strong anti-abortion legislation when the case was certified by the Supreme Court, and this momentum at the state level in passing legislation is thought to have aided in the decision by the high court to hear the case. It is important to note that while most of these laws passed in the states have so far been blocked from enforcement by lower courts, the laws would become effective should Roe v. Wade be overturned through the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case.
