Even though Eric refused to compete in his best event because it took place on a Sunday, he still went on to win two medals: one gold, and one bronze. Due to his fame, Eric Liddell was respected, and he used his life to witness to others about Christ. He sacrificed his comfortable life in Scotland and returned to China, where he lived as a child, to serve as a missionary and teacher with his wife for 20 years. As World War II reached them, Eric surrendered the opportunity to leave China, and stayed to help the wounded. Having created deep relationships with the villagers, Gladys Aylward became a national of the Republic of China in 1936. She was revered in the community and was trusted with over 100 orphans to care for, some of whom she had adopted. In spite of having sustained wounds during the attack, Gladys bravely led all of the children out of danger on a three-week-long, 100-mile journey across the mountains. She sang to them and told them stories of God's faithfulness to His children. But not Pastor Richard Wurmbrand—he stood up for Christ, declaring that communism and Christianity were incompatible. Richard refused to renounce Jesus and continued preaching the Gospel until he was arrested. He spent a total of 14 years in prison. While in prison, Richard was tortured and abused by his captors. But he continued to compose sermons, memorize them, and preach them from his cell. Using Morse code, Richard communicated God's love to the other prisoners, tapping messages on the walls between their cells. He never stopped praying and preaching.
