While SEVP is constantly monitoring to mitigate fraudulent employment activity involving international students, school officials and students should also familiarize themselves with potential fraud indicators and know how to report suspected fraud. SEVP recently published a blog post on the signs of a potentially fraudulent employer. School officials or students who believe they have encountered fraudulent activity should contact the Homeland Security Investigations Tip Line or the SEVP Response Center. Federal regulations allow F-1 students to apply for authorization to participate in optional practical training that directly relates to their major area of study. On Sept. 30, 2019, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) published new policy guidance titled, "Practical Training: Determining a Direct Relationship Between Employment and a Student's Major Area of Study." The guidance explains that students are responsible for providing a description of how their job duties relate to their major area of study, which their designated school official (DSO) must review and retain in the students' files.
