Do Our Dreams Come True? Dear Family,   This past week, I spoke to a gathering of filmmakers at the Christian Worldview Film Festival. What I love most about this festival is the focus on a true Biblical worldview, and the effort to encourage filmmakers—young and old—to look beyond America in order to reach the lost. Last year, The Pilgrim's Progress won "Best Feature Film" at the Christian Worldview Film Festival (the first animated film to do so), and it was my honor to be back this year as a keynote speaker. The lesson God laid on my heart to share included the question: "Do our dreams come true?"   In America, we often strive to attain the "American Dream," which can be understood as the freedom and ability to write our own future. When we think of the "American Dream," we think of success that is defined by a job title, income level, status, notoriety, home size, or business success, among other things. I shared that in my lifetime (as a young 58-year-old), I have often seen these dreams shattered. I think of all the dreams people have for success, and how often they either fail to obtain their goal, or worse, they obtain their goal, only to fail tragically in another area.   One only has to look at Hollywood to see some of the most "successful" people in America experience failed marriages and struggle with addictions. Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, author of Tortured for Christ, once told me that he saw more joy in Communist prisons then he saw in some well-to-do American homes. The church can often be guilty of encouraging people to follow the "American Dream" as people seek to have their "best life now" defined by their income, possessions, or status.    I grew up hearing the words of David in Psalm 37:4 as if it were a formula for success…   Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.   However, I seldom heard the instructions directly preceding this promise in verse 3…   Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. I absolutely believe that God wants to give us the desires of our heart, assuming our hearts are turned toward Him, and we are "befriending faithfulness."   When our hearts are given to God, the successes of this world quickly lose their priority and are replaced with our desire to serve Christ, His kingdom, and to be His witness. And when we align our dreams with God's will, we can experience His success exceedingly more than we can even imagine! Jesus instructs us,   "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." —Matthew 6:19–21 [ESV]   We find the answer here about how our dreams and heart's desires come true. God has blessed many of us, including my family, with a comfortable life. Others are gifted in business and the ability to make money. But this world will fail us. If we want to see a real return on our investments, invest in Christ and His offer of eternal life!   I was encouraged by the passion of those in attendance at the Christian Worldview Film Festival—especially the younger filmmakers. When I shared an update on The Pilgrim's Progress, and the vision for providing a free visual Bible for the world, iBIBLE, many came up to me afterward and offered to help in any way they could. Sharing a message on how to use visual media to take the Gospel to the nations at the Christian Worldview Film Festival. Even as we see church attendance decline in America, especially among younger generations, I have witnessed a new generation of God's servants giving their hearts to Christ. Their dreams do not include a big house or large salary. They dream of bringing Christ to the world! I believe that God will give them the desires of their hearts!   We can follow an "American Dream," or we can follow Christ and His Kingdom. Some may say that we can follow both, but my fear is that only one would win out; we cannot serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). We can follow an "American Dream," or we can follow Christ and His Kingdom.
