The company whose stores famously offered everything on their shelves for one dollar for decades announced today that it is going to start regularly selling higher-priced items, something it had done earlier only in selected shops. The company spun this as a way to offer more choices to customers, but that's just another way of saying that rising costs had unacceptably narrowed the range of merchandise that could be sold for a buck. Inflation has chopped down the Dollar Tree. The powerful forces in the economy pushing prices higher could also be seen in Wednesday's report on pending home sales. Lawrence Yun, the chief economist of the National Association of Realtors, noted that while sales were at a higher volume than expected, this year's price gains were imbalanced compared with wage gains and are therefore unsustainable. That doesn't necessarily mean prices will crash—they could just rise very slowly in the future. It's getting to feel that way in the stock market too. With the S&P up 16 percent year-to-date and nearly 30 percent over the past 12-months, it is very likely that any more upward progress will be made slowly and at great risk of stumbling downward. There is some bright news lurking about. The most improved housing markets, according to the realtors' association, are in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee.
