Dear Webmaster220, In this member update we will cover ABOG "misinformation" and how it might affect you, and a wonderful new website from the Charlotte Lozier Institute explaining fetal development in a way accessible to your patients.   But first… Consider Joining Us At the Supreme Court Dec 1!  Physicians from AAPLOG, Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA), Catholic Medical Association (CMA) , American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) and the Coptic Medical Association (CMANA) will be standing on the steps of the Supreme Court on Weds Dec 1. 2021 as a visual testimony that there are physicians who value both their pregnant patients and the lives of the preborn children they carry.  The upcoming Dobbs oral arguments scheduled before the Supreme Court on December 1 initiates the Supreme Court deliberations in the Mississippi case which bans abortions after 15 weeeks, thereby challenging both Roe and Casey decisions which forbid previability bans on abortion.  This will be the biggest moment in the pro-life movement in more than 50 years.  We plan to be there as physician witnesses, and if you can, we want you to join us on the stairs of the Court that day in support of human life. We have partnered with local hotels to better accommodate our members, and are also offering media training for those interested who will be at the Court with us for oral arguments.  ABOG "misinformation"- What does it mean and who decides?  On Mon Sept 27, ABOG issued a warning statement regarding the penalties for supplying misinformation re: Covid, which "may subject a physician to disciplinary actions, including suspension or revocation of their medical license."  In that statement, ABOG referrs to it's Revocation of Diploma or Certificate Policy.   In that policy,  ABOG states:  "Disqualification or Diplomate revocation also may occur whenever: 3. the physician shall have violated the moral or ethical standards of the practice of medicine then accepted by organized medicine in the locality where the Diplomate is practicing and, without limitation of the foregoing, the forfeiture, revocation or suspension of their license to practice medicine, or the expulsion from, or suspension from the rights and privileges of membership in a local, regional or national organization of their professional peers shall be evidence of a violation of such standards of the ethical practice of medicine;" Why should we be concerned? This week AAPLOG member Dr. Ingrid Skop testified in front of the House Oversight Committee regarding the need for greater data collection on morbidity and mortality from abortion procedures. The Harvard Maternal Health Task Force,in fact,concurs with Dr. Skop's testimony:  "Acknowledging flaws in how maternal mortality data is collected and analyzed, The NCHS' National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) suspended its publication of maternal mortality data in 2007. Since then, substantial literature emerged detailing common errors in state-level maternal mortality data collection and reporting...Errors in maternal mortality data begin with inaccurate information on death certificates." "...errors in cause of death certification occur in one out of every three death certificates. Of particular concern are the lack of and inconsistencies in formal death certificate training and in the reporting of cases of maternal mortality." However, a pro-abortion physician testifying in opposition made an alarming statement:  "I'd like to first remind all OBGYNs that the American Board of OBGYNs has recently warned that spreading medical misinformation can result in loss of board certification." Now, one may overlook the rest of the inaccurate misinformation that the abortion doctor stated during her testimony, including: "It is actually medical fact. We know that when people do not have access to abortion care, that maternal morbidity and mortality rates rise. That's a global fact." ​However, this abortion doctor is 100% incorrect.  Dr. Elard Koch's work in Chile demonstrated clearly that making abortion illegal did not increase maternal mortality, but rather decreased it. In addition, Koch also demonstrated that Mexican states with more restrictive abortion laws did NOT have higher maternal mortality rates.  Further, after  South Africa passed a very permissive abortion law in 1996 their maternal mortality rate has steadily risen since abortion was legalized in 1996 . But what is most concerning about the abortion doctor's testimony is the easy slide from  "misinformation" about Covid to "misinformation" about abortion. Who is going to determine "misinformation"?  ACOG?  While revocation of board certification makes sense when a physician has committed a felony, it is unclear what "suspension from ...a national organization of their professional peers shall be evidence of a violation of such standards of the ethical practice of medicine" might mean, especially when the circumstances of that suspension are not clearly delineated.  Of further concern is that ACOG still stands behind Ethics Statement # 385, which declares "unethical" any obgyn who does not perform or refer for abortions.   And ACOG maintains Ethics Statement #385 despite numerous criticisms from national organizations of their professional peers.  AAPLOG responded to this bullying at the House Oversite Committee with the following statement:  "The American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs (AAPLOG) is disappointed at the attempts to discredit an experienced member of the medical community working to raise awareness on the lack of data collection surrounding abortion complications in the United States. The facts of the situation are clear - reliable, accurate data surrounding abortion complications and procedures in the US is not available, and ignoring quality data from around the world that shows that abortions cause significant complications for women and worsens maternal mortality is scientifically irresponsible and places our patients at greater danger. It is time that our country stop ignoring the realities of abortion procedures by refusing to collect data, and instead treat the health of women and their children with the respect it deserves. " AAPLOG is closely monitoring this potential abuse of the term "misinformation" and it's effect on our membership.  We have the evidence-based high ground.  If you are accused of "disseminating misinformation" because of your pro-life position, please alert us immediately at communications@aaplog.org.    We have your back on this one. The Voyage of Life by the Charlotte Lozier Institute Our friends and partners at Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) have recently released a new site called Voyage of Life.   This beautifully done site offers an accurate scientific presentation of prenatal development which is understandable and interesting for your patients and the general public.
