ARTICLE: Dispensations in the Bible
1:28 Dispensations in the Bible A dispensation is a period of time, or an age, on the present earth during which God tests man’s obedience to His will by means of some specific standard of conduct. The seven dispensations are: 1. the Age of Innocence, beginning at Genesis 1:28 and ending at Genesis 3:22; 2. the Age of Conscience, beginning at Genesis 3:23 and ending at Genesis 8:22; 3. the Age of Human Government, beginning at Genesis 9:1 and ending at Genesis 11:9; 4. the Age of Promise, beginning at Genesis 12:1 and ending at Exodus 19:2; 5. the Age of Law, beginning at Exodus 19:3 and ending at the Cross (Matthew 27:35); 6. the Age of Grace, the church age, commissioned at Pentecost (Acts 2:1–4), and ending at the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Tribulation will be a time of judgment between the Rapture and the Lord’s return in glory (1 Thessalonians 4:13–17; Revelation 19:11–16); 7. the Age of the Kingdom, the Millennium, beginning with the Lord’s return in power to the earth (Revelation 20:4) and ending after the completion of the one thousand years, the doom of Satan, and the judgment of the Great White Throne (Revelation 20:7–15), when the Lord Jesus Christ will deliver up the kingdom to God (1 Corinthians 15:24), and there will be a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21:1). |
