4:9 The love of God for His children was visibly demonstrated through Jesus’ work on the Cross on our behalf. 

Only begotten Son expresses the sense of uniqueness, not a literal birth (see Heb. 11:17). John is the only New Testament author who calls Jesus this (see John 1:18; 3:16, 18). In other words, Jesus is the unique Son of God; no other person is God’s Son in the way He is -- notes from Nelson Study Bible NKJV

§ 4:9 only begotten Son. This means that Jesus is God’s Son in eternity, as the Second Person of the Trinity. The Greek can also be translated “one and only Son,” referring to Christ’s uniqueness rather than to His eternal generation. -- Notes from The Reformation Study Bible
