Why John Lewis Kept Telling the Story of Civil Rights, Even Though It Hurt |
|
|
By Lily Rothman |
Senior Editor, TIME |
When Georgia Congressman John Lewis died of pancreatic cancer at 80 late last week, people all over the world joined in remembering a man whose remarkable life included decades of civil rights activism and political work. That legacy is the subject of this week's special commemorative cover package, which ranges from the firsthand recollections of members of Lewis' 1960s cohort to a meditation from Brittany Packnett Cunningham on how today's activists can move the fight forward.
That range, spanning more than half a century of American life, is crucial to fully appreciating Lewis. As the editor overseeing TIME's coverage of history, I'm lucky enough to spend lots of time with our archives—and those old magazines can offer striking perspective. The man we now remember as the peaceful "conscience of Congress" was, back in the early 1960s, described by TIME as one of the civil rights movement's most "aggressive" figures. In 2017, I spoke to Lewis for our "10 Questions" interview —a previously unpublished excerpt from which is also part of this week's cover package—and I asked him why he thought TIME didn't seem to grasp what he was doing back then. The reason, he answered quickly, was because what he was doing was so new.
The same holds true for many of the movements of today. Understanding how perspectives on Lewis have changed can also help us understand the current moment. And nobody knew that better than he did.
"We used to sing an old labor song on the buses during the Freedom Rides," Lewis told me in 2017. "We would sing, 'Which side are you on, boys? Which side are you on?' I think history is saying to us today, not just in America but around the world, Which side are we on?"
