The Song Worth Singing “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16 Music strikes a chord with me. Perhaps it’s the result of growing up in a home that was filled with melody. It was there I discovered music as a powerful and versatile means of communication and expression. Scripture reveals an important role of music in the lives of God’s people. It was a tool for teaching and passing down accounts of God’s mighty acts. It was a conduit for praise, a way of voicing thanksgiving and joy, and a vehicle for prayer and confession. In times of want, in times of plenty, in times of war, in times of peace, in times of suffering, in times of victory… the Bible is brimming with music for every condition of life. Even our Savior sang a hymn with His disciples after the Last Supper (see Mark 14:26). Years ago, I began setting Scripture to song to commit it to memory. The rich words of Christ echo in my heart and mind when I need them most. Having a song “stuck in your head” can be irritating, but not when the song is of the very words of the Bible and of Jesus. That’s a song worth singing! SF: Psalm 149 Insight: God has given the gift of music as a way to worship and recount His wonders. “Your decrees are the theme of my song” (Psalm 119:54).
