The Cover Story | Dr. Anthony Fauci and Frontline Health Workers Are TIME's Guardians of the Year | | | By Alice Park | Staff Writer, TIME | When Dr. Anthony Fauci was named to the White House Coronavirus Task Force last winter, I felt a bit of relief. I have been covering Dr. Fauci for years, and knew the public would now benefit from the rigorous, experienced scientist and gifted communicator I had come to know. Those skills, I thought, were exactly what we needed during a deadly pandemic. I never could have imagined what happened next. Dr. Fauci's life-long dedication to science and facts was questioned, ridiculed and dismissed repeatedly. Yet whenever we spoke about his frustrations in interviews, he insisted he never thought about stepping down. He wasn't thinking about himself, but about the hundreds of thousands of Americans who died from COVID-19, and the millions of health care workers on the frontlines who put their lives, and those of their families, at risk every day by going to work. That steadfast commitment to science and to the truth at a time when we needed it most is why TIME named Dr. Fauci one of our 2020 Guardians of the Year. He's featured alongside frontline health care workers around the world, whose powerful stories of sacrifice and dedication were, as my colleague Jeff Kluger writes, the glimmer of hope in an otherwise dark and deadly year. Those people will be the lifeline that pulls us through this year and into the next—hopefully wiser, stronger and more resilient. | Read the Story » | Share the cover story | | | |
