The northern border between the U.S. and Canada serves as an important conduit for trade and travel into the country. However, safeguarding and securing this vital point of entry presents unique challenges. "Our northern border faces daily threats such as human trafficking and smuggling of illicit drugs and other substances," explained Tim Bennett, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) program manager for the Air Domain Awareness (ADA) Program. "Oftentimes, smugglers, human traffickers and potential terrorists will utilize low, slow-flying aircraft, both manned and unmanned, to attempt to enter the U.S. through unpopulated and remote areas surrounding the northern border. These aircraft represent a significant security challenge, so it's important that we have appropriate aerial surveillance systems that can quickly and accurately detect, track, and identify them." This capability to detect, track, and identify aerial-based threats is more commonly known as air domain awareness. | | | | |
