Dear Webmaster220,
In this update we discuss the future of conscience rights for medical professionals in the United States, Dr. Christina Francis speaking alongside the Heritage Foundation, and much more. But first...
Thank you to all of you who paid dues on March 1!
We are in this together, and your dues and gifts make our collective voice heard. We greatly appreciate especially those members who have signed up for auto payments, as this greatly simplifies our accounting procedures. If you are currently signed up for auto payments-which happens once per year on March 1 of each year- and you don't want this feature, you have control. Log in to the members website and unclick recurrent payments in your profile. (Note: our website default automatically enrolls members who pay dues with a credit card for auto payments once per year unless the member declines. This is an intrinsic feature of the website.) Please email us if you are having any problems and we will help you asap.
AAPLOG Applauds Supreme Court's Decision to Resolve the Split Over the Title X Rule
AAPLOG applauds the Supreme Court for deciding to resolve the Circuit Court split over the rule prohibiting federally funded family planning providers from referring clients for abortion as a method for family planning. Even as opponents of this rule commonly refer to it as a "gag" rule, the ruling of the Ninth Circuit Court states that there is "no gag rule on abortion counseling" - as long as the medical providers do not encourage or refer for abortion as a method for family planning.
AAPLOG Members Get Involved in the Fight for Life
Four New Hampshire Physicians Testify in Support of New Hampshire House Bill 625 Protecting Unborn Life
Earlier this month four New Hampshire physicians, in addition to Dr. Christina Francis, testified before the New Hampshire State Assembly in support of HB 625, a bill which prohibits a health care provider from performing an abortion if the gestational age of the fetus is at least 24 weeks unless there is a medical emergency. This was the first time a pro-life physician had testified in support of any late-term abortion ban since 2012. If you are interested in testifying in your state, or want to know more about how you can get involved, please respond to this email for further information!
AAPLOG Chairman Christina Francis, MD Defends Medical Conscience Rights in Light of the Equality Act
AAPLOG Chairman Dr. Christina Francis gave a powerful testimony in response the Equality Act passed by the House this week. The bill is a direct threat to conscience rights for physicians, and Dr. Christina Francis detailed the dangers physicians face should their right to conscience protections be violated. To see a video of the testimony from Dr. Francis, please see the YouTube link here.
State Legislative Update
AAPLOG Sends Letters to South Dakota and Arkansas State Legislatures in Support of Conscience Protections for Physicians
As South Dakota and Arkansas state legislatures work to pass legislation protecting the conscience rights of physicians in their respective states, AAPLOG leadership submitted letters in support to state leaders and lawmakers. Both letters detailed the unique need physicians have for conscience protections in order to effectively practice medicine, especially given the current attacks physicians face in practicing according to their respective personal beliefs. See the legislation from Arkansas and South Dakota here and here.
Congressional Update and Upcoming Legislation
Senator James Lankford Leads the Fight for Conscience Rights in the Senate
Senator James Lankford, joined by Sens. Daines, Hyde-Smith, Braun, Lummis, Cotton, Marshall, Cassidy and Cruz, held a press conference on on the nomination of Xavier Becerra as well as the reintroduction of the Conscience Protection Act (S.401). The press conference focused on Xavier Becerra's anti-life record, violation of conscience protections, and inexperience to lead the Department of Health and Humans Services. The nomination of Becerra is the single-greatest threat to conscience rights in the Biden administration, and Senator Lankford has taken to the forefront in proposing legislation protecting the ability of physicians to practice according to Hippocratic standards.
Pro-Life Activity from Across the Landscape
Newly-Released Planned Parenthood Report Shows Abortion Remains Organizations Top Priority
Despite the spin of Planned Parenthood and their allies in the mainstream media abortion remains Planned Parenthood's top priority. The Lozier Institute wrote a blog post detailing Planned Parenthood's 2019 -2020 annual report. This report makes it clear that abortion continues to be Planned Parenthood's top priority. Planned Parenthood performed 354,871 abortions in 2019. This is the most abortions that Planned Parenthood has ever performed in a given year. This also marks a 2.6 percent increase from 2018.Since 2009, Planned Parenthood has performed approximately 63 percent fewer breast exams, 64 percent fewer pap tests, and 7 percent fewer HPV Vaccinations. Additionally, prenatal services performed by Planned Parenthood fell by more than 72 percent. However, between 2009 and 2019 the number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood increased by over 7 percent. The data included in this report makes it clear.
As we transition into a new administration, the fight for unborn life and the conscience rights of physicians and healthcare providers continues to drive activity across state governments, Congress and federal agencies. It is more crucial than ever that AAPLOG and its members stand for life, Hippocratic medicine, and the rights of conscience for the medical profession.
Thanks for standing with us.
