June 29, 2021 Yesterday, I had the privilege of being administered the Oath of Office publicly by Secretary Mayorkas to serve as the new Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. I am honored and humbled to serve as your Deputy, and to begin working alongside each of you. I first began my career of public service at the United States Military Academy at West Point where I became the first Asian American to ever serve as the First Captain and Brigade Commander. During his tenure, he executed multiple overseas assignments in Europe and the Middle East and completed three combat tours in Iraq. John knows better than most what it means to truly safeguard our nation, and I am honored to have his expertise here at DHS. I am proud to share that John is not only the first Asian American to be confirmed as the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, but was the first Asian American to ever serve as the First Captain and Brigade Commander at the United States Military Academy at West Point. John's career boasts many firsts and we are proud that DHS is a part of that history. Read more July 1, 2021 Summer is a great time to get outdoors, go on vacation, and enjoy all the season has to offer. Summer is also a vital time to take precautions on hot days to keep yourself and your family cool and safe. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 600 people in the United States are killed by extreme heat every year. Fortunately, heat-related deaths and illnesses are easily preventable with a few simple precautions. Common heat-related illnesses include: - Sunburn – painful, red, and warm skin that may blister.
- Heat cramps – painful muscle spasms that occur due to dehydration and loss of nutrients from excessive sweating.
- Heat exhaustion – when your body loses the ability to cool its core temperature. Symptoms include cool moist skin, goosebumps, heavy sweating, fatigue, rapid pulse, and faintness.
- Heat stroke – a severe form of heat exhaustion that occurs when the body's temperature exceeds 104°. Symptoms include confusion, red skin, headache, and dizziness.

- Check: Inspect your grill and tools before cooking.
- Chill: Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood cold until it's time to cook.
- Clean: Wash your hands and work surfaces often.
- Cook: Use a food thermometer to ensure meat is cooked to the right temperature.
