Experienced sailors know how little power humans have over the elements. When the winds, storms, and seas are angry, it´s best not to be at their mercy. Yet when the disciples woke Jesus in their panic, the first thing He did was rebuke them. "Ouch!" Their lives were at risk. It is natural to be afraid when your life is being threatened. But however natural it may be, it did not seem to please Jesus. Why?
Our Savior worked hard to show us that our real danger was to our soul and its intended place with Him. Jesus showed us which things we should be afraid of. Our lives, health, careers, comfort, and possessions are all important to Him. But we cannot allow them to distract us. The real dangers are the things that threaten our lives in Him.
An open eye will see that the boat, the storm, and the fear were not an accident that night on the Sea of Galilee. Neither are our problems or predicaments. What we should learn is that Christ can either commend us for our full trust in Him or rebuke us. Every moment holds the potential for God to be glorified. Even now.
Dear Jesus, fill us with awareness. Help us realize that the threats to our earthly states are not more pressing than where we stand with You. As the storms rage around us in these latter days, keep Your chosen ones close. Instead of strengthening our courage, give us greater faith. We can weather anything if we learn to walk with and hold the hand of the One who controls it all. Keep our attention and our trust in You; we pray. Amen
Micah 6:8 ESV / He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV / Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV / Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Galatians 5:16 ESV / But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
John 15:4-5 ESV / Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
